1. Avoid Comparisons and Labels

You want to be the kind of parent who takes the time to instill in your child good manners, habits, and behavior. But how? And with controlled chaos ruling the day, every day, when? Relax: Good parenting happens in real time, on the spot, and in the moment. The trick is recognizing those moments when your actions and reactions can help your child learn and grow in the best possible ways. Here's help from top parenting experts -- and a few real moms.
Be Careful of Comparisons -- and Labels
Your best friend's 8-month-old son is babbling, while your daughter, at 9 months, is silent by comparison. Is there something wrong with your child? While it's never a bad idea to express your concerns to your pediatrician, don't equate developmental milestones with developmental deadlines. "Babies develop so rapidly that one set of abilities is bound to develop faster than another," says Harvey Karp, MD, author of The Happiest Toddler on the Block (Bantam), also available on DVD. "Look at your whole baby" when evaluating development, he suggests, a strategy that holds true for toddlers too: one 3-year-old may have fine-motor-control skills, handling a crayon with dexterity, for instance, while another may throw a ball better -- and that's normal.
Taking into account the whole little person means factoring in temperament too. "It's important to consider who your child is, not just his age. For instance, if your child is naturally shy and quiet, it may be that he's not inclined to talk -- not that he can't," Dr. Karp says. "Listen to him at play when he's alone. He may babble…...

My Way to a Better Life

...My Way to a Better Life Tish Hessig Skills for Professional Development Elaine Shilling, Ph.D. March 12, 2005 My Way to a Better Life How many of us settle for the easy way out? This is a question that I have been asking myself for many years now with regard to my career. Over the last year I have been thinking about my life a lot; where I am, where I have been and where I am going. I have discovered that I settled for my current career as an administrative assistant because it was the easiest decision for me. I am realizing now that being back in school will change my life. I am completing the work necessary to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and I still need to learn what I will gain with my college education. How will my life and my daughter’s life change and how will my professional career change once I have earned my college degree? In my present career, a college education will allow me many advantages such as increased earnings, an improved quality of life, more challenging positions to learn and grow, an opportunity to be a member of the management team, and I will be able to mentor others on the importance of a college education. Twenty years ago when I was finishing high school, the only requirement to getting a job was a high school diploma. Today in order to get that same job, we are required to have a college degree. Even though it was not necessary for me to have a college education, I enrolled in the local......

Changing the Way Children Eat for a Better Tomorrow

...Changing the Way Children Eat For a Better Tomorrow Changing the Way Children Eat For a Better Tomorrow The most important meal of the day for anyone is breakfast. Break-Fast, we go to sleep putting our body into a fasting state, once we awake our body looks for a food substance to break that fast; breakfast. “The federal child nutrition program feeds over 50 million children a day, 31.6 million of whom receive free lunches.” Fig. A USDA (2011) Mortazavi (2011). Millions of children across the United States depend on a well balanced breakfast and lunch. Not only do these meals fuel the body, but it also fuels the minds to enhance comprehension and retaining what they learn. “For many, especially students from lower-income families enrolled in federally subsidized free and reduced-price lunch programs, these are the main meals of the day.” Grainger, Senauer, and Runge (2007). Revamping the National School Lunch program will help meet economic goal, provide healthier choices for pre-school, elementary and high school children across the nation. In 1966 the Child Nutrition Act (CNA) was passed to create a milk program, breakfast program, government funding to start the program and a preschool program (Mortazavi, 2011). Apart of the Child Nutrition Act of 1966, it had to be approved every five years, most recent being scheduled for 2009 but was passed for one year to introduce the current 2010 Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act and the Farm Bill which President Obama signed......

Two Parents Are Better Than One

...Two parents are better than one There are more and more parents who are divorced or they never marriage but have children. In my opinion, two parents are better than one. Not only are children with two parents better off emotionally, financially, medically, etc., than children of single parents, children of married parents fare better than children of unmarried parents living together. The children of happy marriages are much healthier in the term of mental than the children of divorced parents or the children of single parents who were never married. In an article from Rhona Mahony, she writes that: “Researchers interview 60 recently divorced couples who are experiencing such trouble with their separation that they have sought counselling from a professional psychologist. One -third of the parents have generally adequate mental health. An additional 15 percent of the men and 20 percent of the women have severe mental illness, such as paranoid thinking or manic-depressive disorder.” (www.stanford.edu ) She also argued that: “The researchers discover that after the divorce, many of the children in those families have trouble in school and struggle with intense feelings of anger and sorrow.” (www.stanford.edu) It can be seen from the research that not only parents have mental illness but also children. In addition, Mohony refers to Second Chances (Wallerstein),......

Online College: the Better Way to Education

...Online College: The Better Way to Higher Education Ollie St Jules Devry University The Need and Want for Online Schools With all the things going on in an adult’s life, school should not make it more complicated. However the longer the person waits to attend college the harder it seems to work into their daily lives. This is where I believe online learning comes into play. Choosing a college is never easy, but before you pick the specific school you want to attend, you must first decide whether you want to pursue an education at an online university or a traditional college. Online education like everything else has its pros and cons. I’m not saying that online courses are for everyone but they are very beneficial in my life. With me being a full time parent and employee I find that online education is the best solution for continuing your education on your terms. Online education has many benefits that lead me to recommend this option to you. It has been shown to have better success rates, it’s convenient and flexible, it cost less to attend, and it also opens you to the new technologies that are being used in nearly every occupation. One of the top reasons I would recommend online learning would have to be the success rate that is garnering. Beginning around 2000, several studies, including meta-studies (review and analysis of hundreds of studies selected for their rigor), began to find significant differences in favor of online learning. These studies......

A Better Way to Eliminate Mrsa in Hospitals

...A Better Way to Eliminate MRSA in Hospitals According to a study performed by scientists May 29th and related to the New England Journal of Medicine, antibiotic-resistant bacteria that causes MRSA may be preventable. Patients are currently screened for this deadly infection upon entering the Intensive Care unit by nasal swabs to detect if the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is present. This is not a very effective way of catching the staph, administering a treatment, and keeping it confined. A different plan of action calls for bathing patients with antimicrobial soap and water and using an antibiotic ointment in the patient’s nasal cavities two times a day. This has been dubbed “decolonization” by researchers because it erases a lot of the microbes that can colonize the skin or the mucus area of the nostrils. Dr. Susan Huang has indicated that out of 74,000 ICU patients randomly assigned one of three different treatments (decolonization, MRSA screening, screening and decolonization patients with a positive MRSA result), the group with the decolonization method acquired less bloodstream infections than the other groups. I learned that a deadly infection can be treated effectively in order to prevent serious outbreaks by a simple change in routine. Even though this may mean more work for the nursing staff, it is in the best interest of EVERYONE (medical staff and patients) to implement these......

There Is a Better Way for Medicare and Medi-Cal

...According to the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, in 2013 the United States government spent $1.3 trillion on healthcare, mainly on Medicare and Medicaid, which are the government funded health insurances primarily for seniors and people with disabilities and low incomes. This report not only surprises us but raises a crucial question. Is there a way to reduce the cost of the healthcare, yet provide high quality of medical services? To resolve the high cost issue in Medicare and Medi-Cal, the California state government and the federal government agreed to introduce a new healthcare plan called the Coordinated Care Initiative (CCI), which will combine Medicare and Medi-Cal into one system. The CCI will bring notable plan changes to the people who have both Medicare and Medi-Cal, called the dual beneficiaries. The implementation of the CCI is the solution to the government funded health insurance since it will prevent the abusive use of Medicare and Medi-Cal plans yet provide beneficiaries well-coordinated healthcare and easier access to the healthcare providers. First of all, the CCI is the solution to the high cost in healthcare since it will prevent imprudent use of Medicare and Medi-Cal. Abusive uses of healthcare plans by dual beneficiaries have been a persistent problem. According to the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services, the average medical bills spent by the dual beneficiaries, who are 100% covered by their plans, were approximately ten times more than......

Some Ways a Parent Can Benifit from Potty Training

...Some ways a parent can benefit from potty training their children are: Save up to $80 a month by not having to buy expensive diapers and wipes. Run your errands and not have to carry a heavy diaper bag. Be able to use a public restroom and not look for a changing table. Help your child build their confidence. Steps on knowing your child is ready for potty training: Does your child seem interested in the potty chair or toilet, or in wearing underwear? Can your child understand and follow basic directions? Does your child tell you through words, facial expressions or posture when he or she needs to go? Does your child stay dry for periods of two hours or longer during the day? Does your child complain about wet or dirty diapers? Can your child pull down his or her pants and pull them up again? Can your child sit on and rise from a potty chair? Steps to prepare for potty training: Take your child into the bathroom with you. Talk about the advantages of being trained: no more diaper rash, no more interruptions for diaper changing, and the pleasure of being clean and dry. Discuss training as an important stage of growing up. Let your child practice lowering and raising training pants sometimes, or putting them on and taking them off. Have a potty chair in the bathroom and the child might sit on it even with clothes on, while you are in the bathroom yourself, but only if he or she wants to. Don’t scare him or her to sit on the potty just have the equipment in sight so......

The Way We Are: How Much Credit or Blame Belongs to Our Parents

...The Way We Are: How Much Credit or Blame Belongs to Our Parents PSY 304 December 22, 2014 The Way We Are: How Much Credit or Blame Belongs to Our Parents When it comes to parenting and raising our kids we all want them to grow up and be responsible productive adults that contribute positively to society. Unfortunately this is not always to case, the way we raise our kids can either lead them to be positive impact on the society or they could go down the other road and have a negative impact on society. So as parents we are either too blame or given credit for how our children turn out. The parenting style you choose can have a very important impact on how your child lives as an adult. Parents are their children’s most important role models, it is important for parental control in each step of our children’s life and education. As parents we are our children’s most valuable and important role models, what they learn from us will guide who they are as adults. When our children are small one way they learn how to do things is by watching what others are doing and modeling what they do, and how they behave, this is what developmental psychologist Albert Bandura call social cognitive theory. Children are so impressionable they will model a parent’s behavior good or bad. The parenting style you use when raising your kids could have a large impact on the way they turn out as adults. According to developmental psychologist Diana Baumrind there are four different parenting......

A Better Way, Homeschooling

...A new and better way to learn ~Bobbie H.~ “No, I’m not going to do it. You can’t convince me, there is no way I’m going to put her through that. There is no way I am going to home school my daughter,” says Regina Lowenstein, 34. “I want my daughter to have every opportunity and Homeschoolers have no future.” For many people, homeschooling is seen as bad thing, depriving children of experiences and leaving them without a diploma. For several reasons, many people believe that home schooling is bad for their children. They say that it prevents their kids form socialization, their children don’t do as well in school, and that home schooling is too time consuming and costly, yet that is far from true. In truth, homeschooling is a great opportunity for your children and can actuality improve your child’s learning abilities. First of all, one of the main reasons parents say no to homeschooling is time. Most parents don’t have the time to be sitting at home all day and teaching their kids. For them, public schooling is much more convenient, since children can be in school when parents are at work. Yes, home schooling can be time consuming at first, but that is only as you are getting used to the switch. In truth the younger your kids are, the more time you spend with them, so why not spend that time helping them learn and having fun. Many homeschooling programs are a lot of fun for both the parent and the child, involving many fun and enjoyable activities, like art or playing games...

Explore the Ways Parent and Child Relationships Are Presented in Romeo and Juliet

...Explore the ways parent and child relationships are presented in Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is set during the Elizabethan period, where society favoured men over women and the women had to obey the men. Fathers were the ones who decided who there daughters would marry and they cant refuse the marriage because if they did they would bring shame upon the family and most likely disowned by them and if this happened they would have nowhere to go as women didn’t really have jobs apart from housework and looking after the children. I think that this society is bad because it is biased towards men and doesn’t give the women a choice for what they want to do in there own life. In Act 1 Scene 2, we learn that Lord Capulet is a fair and just man ‘for men so old as we to keep the peace’ this shows us that he doesn’t want to make the fued between the Montagues anyworse and wants to stay away from all the violence and try to get on with his own life with his family. Paris asks Capulet if he can marry Juliet ‘ but now, my lord, what sat you to my suit’ but Capulet is cautious about allowing Paris to marry Juliet because he feels she is still too young ‘ my child is yet a stranger in the world; she hath not seen the change of fourteen years’ this shows that he is not ready to let his only child go into the world without him yet as she hasn’t had any experience of what its like for women and he wants to protect her from all the bad things in the world , like any father would want......

8 Ways to Hook Your Audience

...2015/4/7 TED Talk Takeaways: 8 Ways to Hook Your Audience TED Talk Takeaways: 8 Ways to Hook Your Audience By Gavin McMahon on July 30, 2014 | 8 Comments “You will live 7.5 minutes longer than you would have otherwise, just because you watched this talk.” This was the claim that video game designer Jane McGonigal presented to the crowd during her June 2012 TED talk. As the camera panned over the members of the audience, their faces showed universal skepticism: Was this lady serious? There was something else interesting about that crowd. Despite their doubtful visages, everyone in the audience was drawn in by McGonigal’s words. No one was checking their email, talking to their neighbor or looking at the camera circling in front of them; all eyes were fixated on the (potentially crazy) speaker. Great hooks, like McGonigal’s provocative opening statement, get audiences on the edge of their seats and give them a sense of what’s coming. They allow you to win a crowd’s attention right away and give you a legitimate chance to have a lasting impact. Consider the alternative: Have you ever witnessed a presentation where a colleague starts by saying something like, “OK, so we’re going to run through a few major takeaways from last quarter and hopefully be out of here within the hour?” Snooze! All that has you thinking about is whether you should go to the bathroom now or in 20 minutes. Starting your presentation in an unorthodox way provides your audience......

Ways to Better Public Perception of Nursing Profession

In addition, nurses can organize outreach program to educate the public on the role of nurses. Nurse Practitioners who equally can prescribe prescription like doctors can speak out about their role especially where there is shortage of doctors. Getting involved in politics and political action is another avenue for nurses to better educate the public on their role and scope. Nurses play a very important role but their pay is not reflective of that. If nurses can push their case via political action, it will impact their salary and their image. If there is nursing political action group to demand an apology or retrieval of offensive statement against nursing profession, it will go a long way in protecting their image....
