Leadership has been defined as the ability to motivate and influence others to work towards achieving a goal. Leaders of any organizations are sometimes faced with challenges of encouraging employees to adapt to organizational structural and culture changes. John C. Maxell define leadership as being influence “nothing more or nothing less.” In a large organizations the effectiveness of managers depends on influence over superiors and peers as well as influence over subordinates.” (Yukl, 2006, p.145) The COO of Smith & Falmouth (S&F), in the Leadership in Action simulation was faced with the challenge of leading a group of stubborn employees to achieve the company’s goals. The following discussion will address the present cultures within S&F and will make a recommendation for restructuring the e-tailing division that would improve the culture while empowering the employees.
The culture of a group can be defined asa pattern of shared basic assumptions that the group learned as it solves its problems and are taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think, and feel in relation to those problems.” (Covey 2008) S&F Online operations present culture has been identified as a subculture that has been led by the project manager. The project manager and his web development team has been running the department the way that the saw fit. The project manager works very well with the logistic manager and his team. The structure has been identified as centralization. The decision making in an organization is heavily dependent on the type of organizational culture existing in the organization. This fact is not only true with decision making at the higher levels but also applicable to the decisions at the lower levels in the organization. Counselor Affecting Change

...In order for counselors to affect change, they must prove there is a need for the change; they must “have a vision of change; be persistent . . .” (Gibson, 2010, p. 352), and be able to provide evidence to back up the issue they are advocating for. The issue I would like to advocate for is the integration of animal-assisted therapy into more counseling settings. This type of therapy can be used effectively in a variety of settings, including private practice, prisons, nursing homes, detention centers, hospitals, schools, etc. It is particularly effective with at-risk children and adolescents, the elderly, and other vulnerable populations (Franchy, 2011). When animals are used in therapy, it makes it easier for counselors to build positive therapeutic alliances with their clients. Many children and adolescents prefer to communicate in non-verbal ways; therefore, when a counselor brings an animal, such as a dog, into the counseling session, it becomes much easier for a child or adolescent to open up and express their thoughts and feelings by “project[ing] their own feelings onto the dog” (Shallcross, 2011, A Comfortable Relationship section, para. 5). The child or adolescent is more likely to establish a relationship with the dog, which then transfers to a relationship with the counselor. ...English 105 October 9, 2013 That’s just the way it is In the song “Changes” by Tupac Shakur one of his more popular songs, he gives a inside look on his life being an African-American. “Changes” portrays America from a critical non violent point of view, the view of a young black male living in the ghetto committing crime as a survival necessity, while being abused by the system. The chorus says “That’s just the way it is, things will never be the same” Furthermore explaining that inequality will always be rooted in American society. In his first line “I see no changes wake up in the morning and I ask myself is life worth living should I blast myself?” He could be referring to the changes that were supposed to be brought after the civil rights movement of the fifties and sixties. The civil rights movement was meant to put an end to social issues in America such as racism and poverty affecting African-Americans. In his first line he is clearly stating that he sees no changes and that maybe suicide is option out of this life. Finally, difficult goals lead us to discover strategies that help us perform the job or task more effectively. If we have to struggle for a way to solve a difficult problem, we often think of a better way to go about it. This will in turn empower the teams with the discretion to make day-to-day decisions about job-related activities. Nonetheless, a major change is less likely to be successful if the COO tries to dictate in detail how it will be implemented in each part of the organization. The COO who has the authority to make decisions and deal with problems should be delegated to the individuals or teams responsible for implementing change. The COO is empowered to determine the best way to implement a new strategy or support a new program, rather than telling the team in detail what to do. Smith & Falmouth has decided to expand their market and begin selling online with an e-tailing division within the company. A web development has been put into place by the CEO and has asked that the COO will oversee this new operation and ensure that it meets the organization’s strategic goals. The COO is newly appointed and the biggest challenge he faces is having the new teams adjust to new leadership and the style that he brings along to meet the demands of the organization’s plan.
