Blades, Chapter 5 Discussion

1. If Blades uses call options to hedge its yen payables, should it use the call option with the exercise price of $.00756 or the call option with exercise price of $.00792? Describe tradeoff.

Blades should use the call option with exercise price of $.00756 because the amount paid for yen if this option is exercised is $94,500 as oppose to $99,000 if the other call option is used. The tradeoff is that Blade would have to pay no more than 5% above the existing spot rate (which is what they wanted) if this option is used and 10% if the other option is used. Also, the option premium is no more than 1.5% if Blade used this call option. 2. Should Blades allow its yen position to be unhedged? Describe the tradeoff?

No, Blades should not allow their yen position be unhedged due to the historical volatility of the yen. However, Blades could monitor the stability of the yen in the next two months and possibly remain unhedged if the yen remains stable. The tradeoff is that the future price on the yen could have a slight discount from the existing spot rate, which could affect Blades total premium.

3. Assume there are speculators who attempt to capitalize on their expectation of the yen's movement over the 2 months between the order and delivery dates by either buying or selling yen futures now and buying or selling yen at the future spot rate. Given this information, what is the expectation on the order date of the yen spot rate by delivery date? Answer should be one number.

The expectation on the order date of the yen spot rate by the delivery date is $.0072.

Advantages of call options are: 1) flexibility of determining if the stock is conservative or high-risk; 2) Gain leverage without committing to a trade; 3) Limited Risk to the option premium (except when writing options for a security that is not already owned);…...

Week 5 Discussion Questions

...Week 5 Discussion questions Please respond to the following: * Provide at least two pros and cons for each of these scenarios. 1. A supermarket was interested in determining its image. It dropped a short questionnaire into the grocery bag of each customer before putting in the groceries. This strategy comes with its pros and cons that could be looked into pretty deep. The thing I found most interesting is the obvious element of only getting the opinions of people who already shop there. They are asking people who already see their store with a good image because they chose their store over the competitor. Their survey wouldn’t get real information because it would be more informative to go to other grocery stores and try to hand out surveys asking what they like about that store and what keeps them from going to your grocery store. 2. To assess the extent of its trade area, a shopping mall stationed interviewers in the parking lot every Monday and Friday evening. Interviewers walked up to persons after they had parked their cars and asked them for their zip codes. Pros, non verbal cues are noticed and are helpful in studying the purchase behavior of customers, and the interviewing environment is controlled by the researcher of the shopping mall. Cons, there is no incentive to the customer for completing the survey and they may not take the time to do so and, it might annoy customers that are carrying their purchases out to their car. 3. To assess the......

Unit 5- Discussion Board

...Unit 5- Discussion Board: Overtime as the United States progressed and became more culturally diverse, the melting pot theory and the American mosaic concept were formed (M.U.S.E., 2010). During the 19th century, the melting pot theory was formed and described as a blending or fusion of society where different cultures and nations and mixed together to form a common culture. More recently, the American mosaic concept was shaped essentially stating people from different cultures and backgrounds come together in harmony adding their own unique contributions to society, otherwise known as multiculturalism. The American mosaic appears to be a bit more realistic in regards to our society. One reason behind this is everyone is different. The blending of different nationalities, cultures, and religions and forming of one common culture seems a bit outrageous. I think it would be truly unrealistic for individuals to give up their true identity, language, and/or culture to become basically one in the same. Additionally, I do not think it’s possibly for one and all to be considered the same when problems such as discrimination still exist (Carliner, 1975). As stated by Xiao-huang (1998), “the Asian-Pacific population in the United States grew from one million in 1965 to over nine million in 1995”(para.2). This is just one example of one ethnic group who has dramatically changed the American demographic. Asian Americans have made many contributions to American society. This......

...and nail polish removers. All of its products incorporates the use of a highly secret chemical formula derived from fresh lemons, grown on trees right on the grounds of the company.  Only 3 people in the company have access to the secret formula, the CEO, Smitty Smiles, the head of Research, Paul Peel, and the chemist, Peter Dragon, also known as "Puff." Puff has a drug problem. Now, granted, it was in his past, and he has passed 3 out of the past 5 drug tests performed by the company.  The two failed tests were chalked up to a "fluke" as a result of some chemicals he'd been working on.  Puff successfully completed a drug rehab program in 1985, which the company paid for. His doctor at the time announced that he was cured.  Paul has recommended that Puff be fired after both of the failed drug tests, but Puff fought the recommendations through the HR ADA committee, and won both times. One of the other members of a different branch of the research team, Jackie Paper, is good friends with Puff. Jackie underwent a sex change operation 5 years ago, and is now a woman, although she was a man when she was first hired in the company 8 years ago. She is also Asian, and considers herself, as a female minority, in a protected class which is routinely treated unfairly. Recently she filed a complaint with the company compliance department that she felt she had been passed over for a promotion due to her sex change status, and because she is an Asian female. That is currently under......

...-Lease vs. buy decision? Capital equipment is necessary for Granny’s Greenhouse to operate, the actual greenhouse. The greenhouse will have its own heating and cooling features to maintain a steady growing temperature. The cooling system works by running water down the glass panes that have fans blowing air on the water to evaporate, thus cooling the interior. (Priest, 2013) Additional equipment will include computers, pumps, tanks, etc. The total cost is $150 thousand financed at 6% which will fall under an operating budget expense. The financing is a 5 year lease with a zero buyout at the end; which is essentially a loan because even though it is structured as a lease, Granny’s Greenhouse will own the equipment at the end of the lease. (Priest, 2013) A net present value analysis was not conducted to make this decision. Necessity and high margins has given the owner and the bank reason to finance the equipment. However, Section 179 was the deal maker. Part of the “fiscal cliff” bill recently passed included the extension of Section 179 Deduction limits. (The section 179 deduction, 2013) Under Section 179 businesses can depreciate the purchase of capital equipment up to $2 million. (The section 179 deduction, 2013) This is a huge deduction and makes the deal an obvious one. -Do you require new personnel? Additional personnel will be necessary for Granny’s Greenhouse. Jobs will include a Greenhouse Technician, a yearly laborer and a seasonal laborer. ......

I think that the cultural insensitivity refers to the different type of cultures and races around the world and it might translate into loss of business because if there’s not a diversity then the employees will feel like they don’t belong in the work place and customers won’t go into the business because they feel that there’s a preference 4. Week 5 Discussion

...Week 5 Discussion "Shintoism and Zoroastrianism" Please respond to the following: It has been said that a person is Shinto in the same way that he is Japanese. Identify at least two factors which would explain the close relationship between Shintoism and Japanese nationalism.  Shinto is closely related of being Japanese, a very indigenous religion with the Japanese culture with a lot of influence of Buddhism and other imported religions. Based on Shinto legends which link Shinto to Nationalism, it was believed that the native Japanese people are descended from the “Kami”, the most ancient form of spirituality, were present at the founding of Japan. Because of these beliefs, that the imperial families were an unbroken line of descent from Amaterasu, and that the family is older than the people of Japan, and its survival depends on maintaining the relationship between the Emperor and his people, the emperor rule Japan because this is what their gods want to. Allegiance to the emperor is one of the factors of being a Shinto which led to being a nationalist. Another example of would be the Japanese national Flag, a red circle on a white background. Red signifies the rising sun and the white background signifies purity, righteousness, and national loyalty. Explain at least two ways in which Zoroastrianism acts like a bridge between Eastern and Western religions. Based from what I understand with Zoroastrianism, I found out that it is one of the ancient religions in the......

Discussion Board Unit 5

...Discussion Board Unit 5 Comp101/1401B Introduction to Computers A. Questions for weekly discussions and conversations. 1. What are some of the main applications for Object Linking and Embedding (OLE)? OLE 1.0 was released in 1990 by Microsoft; it was the evolved from the Dynamic Data Exchange. A couple of the main applications for Object Linking and Embedding are Microsoft Document and Microsoft Excel. The reason for linking and embedding is maintaining active links between two documents or embedding one type of document within another document. Object Linking is a linked component that stores the path to the original data which is often in a separate fie. Embedding is using the Paste command in a container application that can create an embedded component or an embedded item. 2. Under what circumstances might you use OLE to embed an Excel spreadsheet in a Word document? Why might OLE be better than “copy and Paste”? You might use OLE to embed an Excel spreadsheet in a Word document when you want to work within the original document. It makes it easier to be able to work with. OLE is better than copy and paste because of OLE; you can create a chart in Excel, copy it, and paste the copy into a document in Word. But you can also go beyond the copy-and-paste operation. You can link the copied chart back to its original file in Excel (the source file). Then, if you make changes to the original file, the changes are automatically made to the......

Week 5 - Discussion

...Week 5 - Discussion What would you do if your best friend's daughter, Cindy, comes into the office where you work seeking birth control pills and advice? You know that her mother does not know that she is sexually active and is Catholic. Cindy is also 4 weeks pregnant and seeking advice about an abortion; she is 17-years old. I think that if i would be the one that is dealing with her, I would have to treat her as i would treat any other patient. I would tell her about the risks and outcome of having a abortion and the use of using birth control phyiscally and mentally. I know as a medical assistant that i would not be allowed to tell her what to do just inform her of the birth control and the advantages and disadvantages. As for the abortion topic i could give her information to read about it so she can think about all the pros and cons then decide based on that. You can not tell her what to do but just give her knowledge of using birth control and consequences if you don't protect yourself. Also you can tell her to learn more about abortion before making such a big decision. I would have to watch what i say to her friend because of the hippa laws and risk a lawsuit. What role does Roe v. Wade play in your assessment of the legal and ethical factors of this situation? Roe v. Wade did not legalize abortion. Before Roe, abortion on demand was already legal in several states, while it was available under restricted circumstances in many others, and all...

Unit 5 Discussion

...Ok, for the sake of this Discussion Board our Team have composed a Defense Strategy for Westboro Church Members. Since we are slightly using the Snyder v. Phelphs case as a foundation to show that the Westboro Members were within their First Amendment rights when picketing a funeral, being creative seemed like a good idea. As far as being creative we changed the names to match our names. When first thinking of what kind of questions to ask the question too truly to consider are the issues at hand. The first issue being considered is looking at the protest without the conduct of the Westboro Church Members is protected under the First Amendment. This means to ensure the protest happened on public property, is of public issue, and was of peaceful assembly. The following questions and possible answers would support the defense that the members were within their First Amendment right. Could you recall for me what happened on August 22, 2010? Client1: Sure, August 22, 2010 was the day some of my family and church members picketed a funeral of some soldier. It was pretty much like any other day for us. How exactly did your group conduct your protest? Client1: Well, it wasn't fancy or anything but we were across the street from the church and graveyard with our signs. It was a darn shame that some cars were blocking us. Could you restate the exact location you were standing? Client 1: The exact location had to have been at least 1,000 ft. BECAUSE we weren't......
