Assignment #2 – Case: “Allstate Insurance Company”

USING THE MODEL FOR GOAL SETTING, EVALUATE ALLSTATE’S GOALSETTING PROCESS TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT ALLSTATE HAS AN EFFECTIVE GOAL-SETTING PROGRAM.
After reading through the case study, I must say that Allstate has a great goal setting process. Goal setting is the process of setting targets for accomplishment and has been used by individuals and groups to measure performance and get results (Hellriegel and Slocum, 2011). Goals usually take the form of quotas, work norms, objectives, deadlines and budgets in the realm of business. Many companies, individuals and even cultural groups use goal-setting to decide what, how, and when to complete tasks or to achieve objectives. Although goal setting is useful to keep your performance and skills in check, it is also great to motivate the employees. Goal setting for groups is part of the planning process in which strategies are developed to achieve specific organizational goals. Goal setting works because it serves as a directive function, has an energizing function, affects persistence and action positively, and commits people to behavior.
In the time period of the late 1900’s, goal setting had spread down throughout all levels of the workforce (Hellriegel and Slocum, 2011). Many more companies established quantifiable goals for their employees during 1990’s often by creating quotas or targets for their employees, such as production or sales quotas. Joan Crockett, senior vice president of human resources at Allstate believes that the way to get people’s attention is to set goals and hold leaders accountable for meeting them (Hellriegel and Slocum, 2011).
