Classroom Assessment Techniques-One Minute Paper
Classroom assessment techniques (CAT’s) are assessments conducted in the classroom to assess student learning. This type of assessment helps identify progress of the student and also identify areas that may need improvement. All types of CAT’s are to help facilitate the learning environment (Rowles, 2009). CAT’s are a formative type of assessment which involves immediate interaction between the instructor and student. They are used to assess students’ learning, attitudes, study habits, response to classroom teaching strategies and to help the instructor plan for future teaching strategies and concepts (Rowles, 2009). There are three phases to developing and using CAT’s. The first phase involves the planning phase: determining what setting it will be used in, what information will be obtained and what CAT will be used. The second phase is the actual implementation of the CAT. The final stage involves the results and responding to the CAT. The instructor should review the results and report the finding to the class and reflect on the CAT to identify if it accomplished the goal of the first phase (Rowles, 2009).
I chose to evaluate the One-Minute Paper CAT. The One-Minute-Paper has been used the most and is a quick and easy way to assess classroom teaching and learning (Angelo & Cross, 1993). To use the One-Minute Paper, the instructor ask the students to write a response to the following two questions: What was the most important thing you learned during this class? and what important questions remain unanswered? ...Assessment is a valuable tool to measure students learning and achievement. It is an essential element for teacher to reflect on what and how they teach. To assess students is to collect evidence of their learning. Teachers use the information to modify their lesson plans and adjust their instructional methods; students need feedback on their performance to concentrate on their vulnerable areas. ...Something that will pique their interest in the topic and make them want to learn more. For the purposes of this paper, the concept at hand is the interdependence within ecosystems. The ecosystem the students will be studying is saltwater marshes, plants and animals. Teaching this concept in the classroom will be most successful using a combination of a Jigsaw approach coupled with a STAD (student team achievement divisions) approach. The key elements of both the Jigsaw cooperative learning method and the STAD method include breaking students into racially, socio-economically, gender and differing ability groups. A Critical Review of “Developing Critical Thinking and Assessment in music classrooms” As many American students have a difficulty to reach a goal of testing standard makes music teachers are required to add the reading and writing skills in their classrooms. Maria Stefanova has provided some options to solve this problem in the article called “Developing Critical Thinking and Assessment in music classrooms”. It was published in May, 2011 by American String Teacher. In the article, she presents five classroom strategies to fill the gap between music and literacy classes. The first strategy is a prior step of the class which requires teachers to survey the students about their interest and background, while the second one could be done at the end of the class as an “exit ticket”. The next two are tactics which conceal the knowledge behind the performances and inviting a musician as a guest to classroom. The last one is to ask students to record their homework constantly. The author says that “[these strategies are] not only strengthening music instruction, but also to develop active thinking and assessment tools in the music classroom” (Stefanova, 2001). There are certain elements that I believe are important to have in an elementary classroom in order to produce life-long learners. ...Assessment and Text Evaluation in the Content Area Classroom My content area text book that I chose was an Algebra 1 textbook. Algebra 1 is usually taken in either the 8th or 9th grade. To get estimated grade level I used Fry's Readability Formula. To get this estimation, I randomly selected three passages from the textbook of one hundred words each. For each section of one hundred words, I counted the number of sentences and the number of syllables. For the first one hundred word sample, the number of sentences was roughly 4.9 with 180 syllables, the second sample was roughly 3 sentences with 131 syllables, and the last sample was roughly 5.3 sentences with 156 syllables. This averages out to roughly 4.4 sentences with 155.67 syllables. According to the Fry's Readability Formula, this textbook was estimated to be between the 10th and 11th grade reading level, which is a little bit higher than it should be. After determining the reading level of the Algebra 1 textbook, I then took another passage, from the same textbook, and performed a cloze procedure. To do this, I took another random one hundred word sample and deleted a random word from the second sentence and from there after deleted every five words. The test was then given to two different students.
