The Scientific Equipment Manufacturing company is a small manufacturing unit located in Peenya, Bangalore. The company is non-unionised and manufactures analytical equipment for hospital laboratories. Approximately one year ago, the manager of the Component Assembly Department established three production goals for the department. The goals were : (i) reduce raw material storage costs by 10 per cent ; (ii) reduce variable labour costs (i.e. overtime) by 12 per cent; and (iii) decrease the number of quality rejects by 15 per cent. The manager told the six unit supervisors that the degree to which each supervisor or exceeded these goals would be one of the major inputs for their merit – pay increases for the year. In previous years, merit increases were based on seniority and an informal evaluation by the department manager. The six supervisors worked on separate but similar production lines. A profile of each supervisor is as follows :
Amitha Aged 28, single; three years with the company after receiving her degree from the Bangalore University. Has a job offer from another company for a similar job that provides a substantial pay increase over her present salary. The scientific Equipment does not want to lose Amitha because her overall performance has been excellent.
Shindhe Aged 32, married with three children; three years with the company, high school education. One of the most stable and steady supervisors. However, he supervise a group of workers who are known to be unfriendly and uncooperative with him and other employees.

...Determining Density Purpose: To determine density using measurements of mass and volume. Hypothesis: I think that from least dense to most dense it will be water, syrup, ketchup and then sand. The reason I think this is because in all of our viscosity experiments water was the least viscous and when we did the ketchup experiments it was thick, but not thick as molasses. Finally, I think sand would be the densest because it is a solid. ...Before the “Determining the Percentage of Oxygen in Air” lab, the students were to read the background and purpose information on the lab. The experiment was designed to determine the percentage of oxygen in a given air sample. The purpose of this lab, although, was to teach students to be familiar with laboratory procedures and safety. On the day of the lab, Mrs. Robinson spoke to the entire class on how to do the experiment and the materials that we needed. We then proceeded to put on our safety aprons and goggles. My partner, Wyatt, and I gathered the materials of a 100mL graduated cylinder (with a 0.1 accuracy), a pie tin, a small candle, and a lighter. We needed to be incredibly safe with the lighter. The only chemical is water. When we first got our pie tin, I noticed there was some wax already on the bottom meaning that it was already used. We had trouble getting the candle to stick to the pie tin, but we did and we filled the rest of the pie tin with water. When we lit the candle I could smell the fire. The graduated cylinder was placed over the candle and the flame started to die down and I could see smoke in the rest of the cylinder. As the flame died, the water around the candle started to rise. When the flame did eventually die, the water vacuumed up at a faster rate. The same results followed with other trials only with different readings. The typical fields that would be needed for such database would be the following: Event Name, Event Date, Name of equipment/display, Serial Number, Date ordered, Date shipped, Date delivered, Date packed, Date shipped, Date received, Loss remarks. The first tracking relationships would be of course the Event Name, Event date and Name of equipment, Date ordered. By tracking these fields, I would be able to figure out what types of equipment or displays to order for the event and ensure timely delivery for the event. The second tracking relationships would be the return of the equipment which would include packing date, shipping date and date received and any losses incurred. By tracking the return of the equipment, I would be sure that the equipment has been accounted for and safely returned back to the warehouse. By using a tracking program for each event, the accountability for the equipment is monitored from the day it leaves the warehouse and is returned safely back to the warehouse.
