Weight Loss Plans – A Comparison Controlling one’s weight can be difficult in this age of fast food and easy access to a variety of foods. Once weight is gained, it can be a daunting task to remove the unwanted weight. There are many programs out there to assist with weight loss. Two popular weight loss programs are the Atkins Program and Weight Watchers. Each has a relatively simple program to encourage weight loss; however, they vary widely. Atkins is based on a plan written by Robert Atkins 40 year ago.1 He based his weight loss theory less intake of carbohydrates would force the body to turn stored fat into fuel.2 The program is divided into three stages: induction, ongoing weight loss and maintenance.3 In the induction phase the dieter is limiting carbohydrate intake to 20 grams per day. Protein is unlimited and obtained by eating meats, eggs and cheese. The 20 grams of carbohydrates per day are obtained through allowed vegetables. During this phase, breads, alcohol, nuts, caffeine, seeds and legumes are strictly banned. During the ongoing weight loss phase, the dieter still limits the total carbohydrates but is able to add some back. This new grams of carbohydrates should be obtained by more vegetables, seeds and nuts. Low carb alcoholic beverages are now allowed. This can, however, slow continued weight loss. During this phase, the dieter needs to monitor weight and carb intake. When the dieter’s weight plateaus, the dieter either needs to decrease the carb intake to continue to lose weight or stay at that carb level to maintain the current body weight. The maintenance stage is based on that carb intake number where the dieter begins to no longer lose weight. That is the level the dieter needs to ingest to maintain the desired weight.4 The Atkins Program has many pros to it. There are no meetings to attend. There are no prepackaged…...

Vegetarian Diet vs. Omnivorous Diet

...Vegetarian Diet Vs Omnivorous Diet Vegetarian: a person who does not eat meat or fish, and sometimes other animal products, especially for moral, religious, or health reasons (Oxford). Evolution dictates undisputedly the fact that in order to survive all animals including human beings must consume the by-products of DNA (Evolution). Since living organisms (i.e. Plants &/or Animals) are the only provisions for DNA, their consumption is vital in securing a position in the cycle of life. For many, taking on the role of a vegetarian is far from thought. It may be because of the great difference in taste between the two that separates a person from even the slightest cooperation with the idea or the simple but vast feeling of the unwillingness to change something that’s working. Some might even argue that an herbivorous diet is no where near as healthy as an omnivorous diet. Well, the truth is, a vegetarian diet can indeed actually prove to be healthy. Once it is carefully and properly planned out, of course. In fact the design of a human’s intestinal tract, being long and all places homo-sapiens more in the category of herbivorous than carnivorous. As longer intestines allow herbivores more time to break down and assimilate tough-to-break-down plant fiber (Walker, 2006). A diet absent of meat can prove to be more advantageous than the contrary; as it consists of lower levels of total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol which allows for a lower risk of obesity, coronary heart......

...Introduction: Insulin resistance is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), both independently and in association with the metabolic syndrome. Impaired insulin sensitivity has been documented in those known to be at risk for diabetes, such as normoglycemic first-degree relatives of people of T2DM, and women with history of gestational diabetes. Although present in most people who developed T2DM, insulin resistance is generally present for many years before changes in blood glucose concentrations are evident. Despite possible influences from genetic and perinatal factors, diet and physical activity are likely to have greater and overriding influence in generation of the metabolic syndrome and T2DM. Dietary intakes of vegetable fat, polyunsaturated fatty acid, dietary fiber (particularly cereal fiber), magnesium, and caffeine are significantly inversely correlated and intakes of trans fatty acid and heme-iron, glycemic index, and glycemic load are significantly positively correlated with the incidence of type 2 diabetes (Murakami K et al J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo) 2005; 51:292-310). Studies have shown a significantly decreased risk for T2DM with the higher consumption of grain (particularly whole grain), and significantly increased risk with processed meat consumption (J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo) 2005; 51:292-310). Increased obesity is associated with insulin resistance. Other important factors contributing to insulin resistance......

...Natural Weight Loss and Diet Pills Taking diet pills could bring immediate results; however, eating healthy foods and exercising regularly is the best way to lose weight. The body can maintain its ideal weight when it is focused by a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle consists of eating nutritional foods as well as exercising regularly. Developing a new style of eating will show that food preferences will slowly change when high sugar and high fat snacks are cut out; cravings will go away in time. The body needs healthy food to function properly. Choosing foods from the four main food groups can be a guide for creating balanced and nutritional meals. By choosing to eat healthy, there is more room for enjoyment. Instead of the typical three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), a person can eat four to five small proportional meals each day. The weight gain and loss will be controlled as long as the person does their homework. Counting the calorie food intake is necessary to be sure that a person consumes 1,200 to 2,000 calories a day. Drinking six to eight glasses of water a day and a large glass of water with meals as well as after a meal can help control appetites and metabolize fat. The day should begin with a healthy breakfast. This consists of foods such as eggs, which contain protein, orange juice that has vitamin C, and one slice of toast to give the body fiber. To help with hunger building up, try eating about two snacks between meals. However, it is......

...whether dieting or exercising is more likely to lose weight is vital. The purpose of my essay is to compare and contrast the expenses, health benefits, and weight loss between these two methods. Exercising to lose weight can be expensive, if you don’t do your research. Most exercise plans cause for gym equipment, memberships, video tapes, and clothing. These expenses can be lowered by finding an alternative exercise, which doesn’t cause for purchasing Items. Dancing and step aerobics can be done in your own home, avoiding membership fees. Unlike exercising, dieting doesn’t require equipment to lose weight. Dieting requires nutritious food, that’s low in calories. Dieting can get expensive, if you choose to lose weight by taking pills. Diet pills are required to be taken over a long period. To avoid these expenses, you should choose a healthy eating plan that will stick with you for the rest of your life.  Exercising has its benefits. There are many exercises you can do to maintain good health. Some examples are, walking, running, aerobics, and weight training. ...The Paleo Diet The Paleo Diet or Paleolithic Diet is referred to as the Caveman Diet, the Stone-age Diet, and the Hunter-Gatherer Diet. It is not about tearing chunks of meat off animals. It is about type of foods that are eaten. The Paleo Diet is the healthiest way a person can eat because it is the only nutritional approach that works to help stay lean, strong and energetic. Researchers indicate that the modern diet which is full of refined foods, trans fats and sugar cause diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and infertility. Scientific research studies show that diets rich in Omega-3 and Monounsaturated fats will reduce these diseases dramatically. Some of these foods include lean proteins for strong muscles and healthy bones and it satisfies hunger between meals. Fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants decrease the development of degenerative diseases. Also, healthy fats from nuts, seeds, olive oil and grass fed meats reduce these diseases (Wolf, 2014). The purpose of the Paleo Diet is to eat a low sugar diet to avoid inflammation. High sugar and high starchy foods turn into sugar and produces inflammation. Cells can absorb so much sugar before becoming inflamed and hormones control blood sugar so a person will not pass out (miraclenoodle.com, 2014). The fact that the Paleo Diet delivers the best results is the fact that most people needs. It improves blood lipids, weight loss and reducing pain is......

...Many diets have been developed to help people lose weight. However, many of these diets were developed without the input of dieticians or doctors, which makes them potentially dangerous. Understanding the pros and cons of a diet are vital to increasing the chances of success. One of the most popular diets in the last ten years is known as the South Beach diet, developed by Dr. Arthur Agatston. Unlike many competing diets, a famous cardiologist developed the South Beach diet. His medical training helped him develop a diet that follows medical guidelines and is not extremely dangerous if followed accurately. The diet requires the person to eat high-fiber, low-glycemic carbohydrates, unsaturated fats, and lean protein. His method categorizes carbohydrates and fats as good or bad, based on how much the food will affect weight. Unlike other diets, it does not restrict calorie intake. However, it does include an exercise program, which works to burn off existing calories. While many people promote the South Beach diet, it is not considered to be side effect free. The first stage of the diet aims for rapid weight loss by cutting water weight. The change in weight due to the loss of water can throw off the electrolyte balance and severely dehydrate the person. Other critics believe that the lack of dietary fiber, which is known to aid in weight loss, can have a negative affect on the body. Also, certain doctors believe that the glycemic index, on which the diet is based, is not...

...“The diet is high in fat, supplies adequate protein and is low in carbohydrates. This combination changes the way energy is used in the body. Fat is converted in the liver into fatty acids and ketone bodies. Another effect of the diet is that it lowers glucose levels and improves insulin resistance. An elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood, a state known as ketosis, leads to a reduction in the occurrence of epileptic seizures (“What is the ketogenic diet?,” 2014 ).” It has also been called low carb diet, or low carb high fat. When the body has carbs, it produces insulin and gluecose which gets converted to energy. In the ketogenic diet the body then goes into ketosis and produces ketones from fat in the liver. “The end goal of a properly maintained keto diet is to force your body into this metabolic state. We don’t do this through starvation of calories, but through starvation of carbohydrates. Our bodies are extremely adaptive to what you put into it – when you overload it with fats and take away carbohydrates, it will begin to burn ketones as the main energy source (“A guide to the keto diet, 2015).” A ketogenic diet helps those who have have seizures or are epileptic, and also those who want to lose weight. The diet can also improve energy levels, lower blood sugar and acne, and improves cholesterol. Just like every other diet it has its pros and cons. The diet is also likely to cause fatigue and become macronutrient deficient. Luckily there are......
