...Nigerian entrepreneurs whose business forays revolutionised the Nigerian private sector in several significant ways. King Jaja of Opobo, Chief Nana Olomu of ltsekiri and Richard Blaize of Lagos were prominent during the pre-colonial period. The colonial era witnessed the emergence of Chief W.A. Dawodu, Chief J.A. Odutola and Sir Philip Ojukwu. The post-colonial period has thrown up distinguished entrepreneurs such as Chief M.K.O. Abiola, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Chief Mike Adenuga. Of course, there are several other distinguished entrepreneurs but the major criterion used in selecting the above-mentioned names revolves around (a) the size of their respective business empires (b) the extent of their resourcefulness and innovativeness and (c) the daring nature of these businessmen as well as the remarkable influence that they have exerted on the Nigerian business terrain. It is important to note that the division into three epochs, i.e. pre—colonial, colonial and post-colonial is simply for the purpose of scholastic tidiness and historical periodisation; at times, the business activities of some of the entrepreneurs of a particular era often dovetail into the next epoch. Thus, me emphasis here is on the particular period when a given entrepreneur made its greatest mark. 4.2.1. The Pre-Colonial Era 4.2.2. From Slavery to Stardom: The Story of King Jaja of Opobo Jubo Jubogba, also known as Jo Jo Ubam by the Igbo and as Jojo of Opobo, first, by the Europeans and later by......

...schoolwork and pleasing her father so he will not beat her. Kambili lives in a constant state of fear and unhappiness and cannot bother to enjoy the luxuries of her life. On the contrary, poverty does not lead to unhappiness. Aunty Ifeoma and her children embody this. Living with them and sharing their humble lifestyle is when Kambili starts to open up. She begins to speak, louder and clearly, unlike her former, silent way of communication with Jaja through their eyes. She even begins to laugh, an ability she had not been aware she could do. “As we drove back to Enugu, I laughed loudly, above Fela’s stringent singing. I laughed because Nsukka’s untarred roads coat cars with dust in the harmattan and with sticky mud in the rainy season. Because the tarred roads spring potholes like surprise presents and the air smells of hills and history and the sunlight scatters the sand and turns it into gold dust. Because Nsukka could free something deep inside your belly that would rise up to your throat and come out as a freedom song. As laughter.” Jaja adapts to Aunty Ifeoma’s outspoken, unapologetic values quickly, and challenges their father upon their return. Because of his experience with Aunty Ifeoma’s encouraging, liberal, parenting style, he has begun to form his own identity. It is when people do not have money that they are forced out of their comfort zone and must live for things other than possessions. The end result is that the less fortunate, once they meet all......

...stay with Aunty Ifeoma, who encourages them to share their thoughts and speak their minds. Aunty Ifeoma’s household offers a marked contrast to what Kambili and Jaja are used to and in this nurturing environment, they become more open and more able to voice their own opinions. At the same time, their mother-Beatrice poisoned Eugene for unable coping with his continual violence. Kambili has become a woman of eighteen, more confident than before and fell in love with a young priest while Jaja took the blame for the crime. Obviously in the end, they all gained a better future. The trigger for this domestic tragedy was Papa’s false understanding of religion. Eugene is a wealthy and prestigious businessman as well as a very strict Catholic who dominates his family by imposing a harsh religious regime in the family home. He controls almost every aspect of his family’s life, including imposing a schedule for Kambili and Jaja so that every minute of the day is mapped out for them. On the other hand, he donates considerately amounts of money to the society and church and he is prone to outbreaks of violence. Eugene has two different masks to face public and private. As Eugene was raised in Nigeria, he rarely uses his native tongue at home and never in public. Also, Eugene carries a shame for his roots. For example, Kambili and Jaja are not allowed to visit their grandfather Papa Nnukwu for more than 15 minutes for he was pagan and even when he was died, Eugene refused to make him a......

The two texts do have some contrasts as in "Coming to America, to clean", we are told that it is a very dangerous trip; meanwhile “America” doesn’t focus on the risk of traveling to America. b) Are they slaves in the U.S. or are they "free"?
