To what extent do you agree that learning is a social process?

Everything we learn takes place in a social context. Social learning can be applied to many scenarios ranging from a group of children collaboratively trying to solve the question of how to make a kite, to a university professor writing a research paper with a colleague, both illustrate the case of a social side to learning. On the other hand some people believe that learning is an individual process, such as reading, researching and searching online, and the social element only occurs when you engage with your network. This essay will discuss both arguments, but focus strongly on the contention that daily observations and experiences, as well as many academic theories suggest that learning takes place beyond the confines of the individual mind, and is therefore a very social process.

Learning and social process are defined in various ways. The Collins Dictionary (2012) defines learning as knowledge gained by study; instruction or scholarship, the act of gaining knowledge. It also provides a more specific definition with relation to psychology being any relevant permanent change in behaviour that occurs as a direct result of experience. Further to this both the Oxford and Collins Dictionaries (2012) offer the definition of social process as societal change. Some thinkers associate this with socialisation, socialisation is social learning. During different stages of our lives, we belong to different groups and as these change and develop we learn new rules and patterns of behaviour. We also don’t remain in the same role during this journey, we begin as children, go through adolescence into adulthood, marry, become parents, enter middle age, retire, grow old and finally die. One useful questionnaire to aid in determining your learning style is the VARK questionnaire. “The questionnaire alerts people to the variety of different approaches to learning. With the idea behind Teen Night being that there is an option for kids to get out, socialize and participate in many different experiences on a Friday night, in order to try to keep them from choosing activities that would be poor choices and possibly getting in trouble. Although this activity is open to any junior high and high school student in the area, I realized very quickly that most of the teens that attended could easily be labeled as “high risk” teens. Many of them have very stressful/negative settings at home. For some of the teens this was easily identifiable quickly. Others were very good at hiding their troubles. I enjoyed serving my service learning hours at Fort Boise, but, in a way, I wish I would have chosen an organization where I would have been able to get a little closer to the people, on a personal level. Teen Night was just more of group interaction (playing basketball, dodge ball, video games, etc.). There was one teen (Will) I was able to form a bond with that was, originally, very closed off. I later found out, from one of the other volunteers, there were concerns of suicide with Will. I will discuss this bond further into the paper, but I will say that connecting with Will was the highlight of my service learning. Social Learning Theory (SLT) has two assumptions; the first assumes behaviour is a product of environmental influences and is therefore learned as a result of observation and modeling. Whether the behavior is acquired depends upon a person’s perception of reinforcement and rewards. It emphasises the importance of individuals actively seeking out behaviour and attitudes. The process of social learning involves four stages; attention, retention, reproduction and motivation. Firstly, a person pays attention to a behavior which is being modeled or reinforced and the behavior is then memorized. The person then tries to imitate the behavior but only if they have observed that their action will provide desirable consequences i.e. a reward. The second assumption suggests that mediating cognitive factors, such as memory and thinking, occur between the stimulus and response. We do not observe and automatically imitate the behaviour that we observe, but think about several factors before we imitate. For example, we may ask ourselves whether we are physically able to carry out the action we have observed and whether we want to do it or not.
