LITERATURE REVIEW

ABSTRACT

The economic recession that hit the world in 2007 resulted in global downsizing in many prestige organizations and its effects of workers productivity. This literature reviews focuses on affective organizational commitment among survivors of organizational restructuring and downsizing. It focused on middle level managers and employees in supervisory positions because survivors of this group are often called upon to assume expanded roles, functions and responsibilities in a post restructuring and downsizing environment. This paper also explores the impact of recession for those still in employment by looking at a key indicator of employee wellbeing, work pressure staff reductions and company reorganization both increase work pressure, as does current job insecurity. Other job changes, like large pay cuts, increases in responsibility, autonomy and monitoring also increase work pressure.

INTRODUCTION The great recession of 2007 started on the month of December. National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the prestigious private research institute declared it officially. The government of US acknowledged the NBER's declaration, aware of the downfall since August 2007; the White House did not change its course on coping with the financial crisis. This was the third longest since The Great Depression. The Great recession in the US damaged greatly in 2007 since the 1930s.     At least 8 million jobs were lost $10 trillion dollars of wealth lost in US Closure of hundreds of banks According to RealityTrac. ...Having examined the various models of grief and loss, it became evident that many look at it in the context of loss to death. The loss of a person through death is momentous to us as the most recognised source of grief but it is not the only source. “Loss as majestic as death or as mundane as taxes, is the sure thing in every life, the experience that is as common as April rain in almost everyday in some form or other, in our lives.” (Kennedy, E. & Charles, S.,C. 2001.pg372). ...Grief: Kite Runner The author Khaled Hosseini expresses the theme guilt with a single phrase, "But, always, my mind returned to the alley. To Hassan's brown corduroy pants lying on the bricks" (Hosseini 91). The author expresses many themes throughout the book but grief is the most common and most captivating. But the feeling of guilt after committing our actions is what evokes the need to atone for the effects we have caused like Amir not acting when a friend was in need, Amir getting Sohrab, and Baba's betrayal to his friend Ali. Amir's story begins with an incident that haunted him throughout the book and this incident involved Hassan his best friend. He watched him get rapped and did nothing about it. He began thinking of one of Hassan's dreams with a monster in the lake, "There was a monster in the lake. It had grabbed Hassan by the ankles, dragged him to the murky bottom. I was that monster" (Hosseini 86). After a few years of suffering he went back to Afghanistan to find Hassan's son to help him forgive himself for his actions inability to act when they were children. This guilt he felt drove him to make things right with himself. Amir was reluctant at first to go into Kabul but he went through it due to Rahim Khan's death wish, for him to find and care for Sohrab. ...in life, but what about it leaves people to grieve the way they do, and affect the way they live their lives? “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” by Jonathan Safran Foer is a testament of what it means to be human, how people grieve, and how they are affected by their losses. Several characters in the book are going through some sort of grief through loss. Searching for answers that will probably never be found each of them is brought together and deal with their respective issues differently. Most of them spend years of their lives attempting to understand and find closure, but some don’t find any at all. No grief is greater than the other, no matter how miniscule some seem. It’s how they responded to the losses that defined what kind of person they are. Oskar Schell finds his own unique ways of dealing with his grief. Dealing with his issues in his own unique way, Oskar is doing his best to prevent the loss of his father from destroying his entire world. He uses the key he found, his inventions, and even self-harm to help grieve the untimely loss of his father. Using his journey to find what the key opens as way to cope with the grief of losing his father, Oskar struggles to understand why this is happening to him. ...to Cope with Grief and Loss Grief and loss are inevitable experiences that affect the older adult. Grief is defined as “the emotional response to a loss or death” (Yancey & Hunter, 2014, p. 449). As adults age their friends gradually die, they may outlive older generations of their family, health may deteriorate, and abilities and independence may diminish. The loss of loved ones, health, and independence, among many other losses, can give rise to grief in the older adult. Grief is a natural response to loss. While some can adjust to the conditions of loss in others it can intensify to the point where the individual is unable to cope with the loss (Gibson, 2012). The inability to cope with grief can yield undesirable effects such as: depression, anxiety, insomnia, increased use of alcohol or drugs, and decreased social interaction (Potocky, 1993). This is why it is necessary for the nurse to facilitate the grieving process. Jean Watson’s theory contains relevant concepts that nurses can incorporate into their care of the older adult experiencing grief.
