Select a global health issue impacting the international health community. Briefly describe the global health issue and its impact on the larger health care system (i.e., continents, regions, countries, states, and health departments). How can health care delivery systems work collaboratively to address global health concerns?

Malnutrition is a problem that is estimated to contribute to more than one third of death among children (WHO, 2014). Under nutrition is a form of malnutrition; it occurs when nutritional reserves are exhausted or nutritional intake is insufficient to satisfy daily needs or increased metabolic demands (Jarvis, 2013, p. 175). Prolonged periods in this state can lead to stunted growth which is associated with lower intelligence quotient and difficulty learning among children (Maurer and Smith, 2013). Malnutrition increases the risk of disease and early death. Children who are undernourished are also at risk for lower resistance to infectious diseases, delayed wound healing, longer hospital stays and higher healthcare costs (Jarvis, 2013, p. 175). Political problems, wars, population increases, poverty and natural disasters contribute to the problem of malnutrition.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (as cited in the World Health Organization, [WHO], 2014), 792 million people worldwide are affected by long term food deficits including 20% of the population in developing countries. Malnutrition is especially common among poor populations. More than 70% of children with protein energy malnutrition live in Asia, 25% live in Africa and 4 % live in Latin America and the Caribbean (WHO, as cited in WHO 2014).
The health status of populations is largely influenced by income levels and healthcare availability and accessibility, and consequently varies greatly among different countries. Thus, healthcare systems in richer countries,…...

It has been estimated that 37-80 percent of all pre-school children in the developing countries like Philippines suffer from protein calorie malnutrition as assessed by the manifestation of syndromes, nutritional indexes, and weight deviations (Bengoa, 1974). Mild to moderate malnutrition, also called chronic under nutrition, is much more common than severe forms, and is often difficult to recognize. The severe forms are either due to insufficient protein and calories (marasmus) or to an acute protein loss or deprivation (kwashiorkor). At present, when increasing investment in our educational programs is being made to improve the performance of the schoolchildren however, to some extent this are being wasted. Children are not reaching their full intellectual potential consequently, predispose to school failure. In public elementary schools particularly the Kalibo Elementary School I, where malnutrition is prevalent among schoolchildren, it is observed that children has low attention-span, lack interest and decreased ability to focus on tasks, and restlessness. Small irrigation can waste less water, stone lines and check dams. For example, Burkina Faso uses stones lines and Northern China uses small dams built of loess, which are constructed across gullies. Those methods only use 5% of farmland but increase the crop yields over 50%. Fertilizer from local animals should be used instead of chemical fertilizer. That means one in seven people in the world do not get enough food to maintain a healthy body and lead active lifestyles, making hunger and malnutrition the number one risk to health world wide. Natural disasters, conflict, poverty, poor agricultural infrastructure and over-exploitation of the environment remain the key causes of hunger, and the recent economic slowdown in many countries have pushed more people into hunger (WFP). The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) states that more than 90% of the 925 million chronically hungry people in the world are in developing countries, there are 642 million in Asia and the Pacific, 265 million in Sub-Saharan Africa, 53 million in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 42 million in the Near East and North Africa. Many people in our society don’t know about malnutrition and aren’t aware that this is actually happening right before their own eyes. Malnutrition is the condition that occurs when your body does not get enough nutrients. Any age group can get it especially senior citizens. I have been doing a lot of research throughout the week in order to present this issue to you. I have brainstormed three solutions to this issue which include hosting a canned food drive, buying family groceries, or sending home “care packages” with school aged kids. In making the decisions I made during this project of choosing solutions to the issue, I had to do a lot of research as well as use a lot of time thinking and comparing the costs and benefits of each possible solution. I completed many research charts and answered questions about economical issues as well as the issue I chose. It was hard work but it all paid off and will pay off in a major way in many lives. The steps I took in making the decisions I made was finding out the root of the issue, taking notes, making charts, comparing government sectors, and finally putting it all together.
