Writing has always been intimidating to me. Like many people, I gravitate towards things that I am naturally good at. In school, I would use my strengths in math and science to my advantage to over compensate for my lack of writing ability. I find myself doing that same thing to this day. As a writer, I consider myself to be slightly below average. My inexperience coupled with a lack of interest, turns writing into a grueling process which is ultimately reflected in my writing. One thing I do have to my advantage is that once I begin writing, I am committed. I try to be thoughtful with word choice and will research topics as much as possible to learn all that I can so that my writing is accurate and well thought out. While this is a great strength and I believe my ideas are solid, I have always struggled with putting my thoughts onto paper in a way that is clear and concise to readers. My writing is often too wordy and full of details that are not crucial to the point. I also tend to write the same way that I talk. Writing this way may work well in specific genres, but is not for academic writing.
As a whole, the writing process is very time consuming for me. This is something that I would rate as the least desirable part of writing for me. I spend a lot of time organizing my thoughts in my head before I even begin to put them on paper. I will often use a large portion of time researching my topic to understand the whole picture. I like to hear conflicting arguments and a variety of perspectives. I think this helps me to make solid and deliberate actions when I’m writing. After researching, ideas will churn in my head for hours until I can figure out a way to put them on paper in a way that makes sense to me and to a reader. I need to find ways to organize my research and thoughts in a way that I can easily access.

Writer Autobiography

...Writer Autobiography When it comes to writing, it may be captivating and enjoyable for some while being threatening and intimidating for others. Throughout my academic career, I have learned a great deal about writing. Starting from grade school all the way up until college, writing has been a fundamental part of my life. I have come to learn that from all my experiences and influences, I have been shaped into a descriptive writer. My strength in writing has always come from describing a situation in as much detail as I can. This shaping of mine has been characterized by certain events and certain people in my life, and it has helped give an identity of what type of writer I am and what type of student I am. In order to develop into an adequate writer with an identity for yourself, one must have been educated a certain way. For me, there was one person in particular that helped turn me into a comfortable descriptive writer. In my sophomore year of high school, my English 2 teachers’ name was Jeannette Maldonado. She, like many of her other peers, was a first year teacher, and I did not expect to get an adequate grasp of writing and literature because of her inexperience. However, Ms Maldonado turned out to be a major turning point in my writing life, as she would not only challenge her students on assignments, but would give constructive criticism and work with you to help develop your ideas. Up until that point, I had been just an average writer and really did not give......

Becoming a Writer

...BECOMING A WRITER January of 2011 was the beginning of a special adventure in my life as a student. I took an English class 0890, at Utah Valley University. Now, in the last days of this class, almost four months later, I can look back and see myself with a lot of problems in my writing that needed to be fixed. These four months in this class have helped me solve many writing challenges. I am far from perfect in becoming a good writer but I have learned that hard work and perseverance can produce wonderful results. Even though I learned many things, the three man points that I want to talk about are the following: quote analysis scaffold, grammar, and research online. The first month of the English 0890 class was intense, the students had to do a special analysis writing exercise called “Quote analysis scaffold”. It is the developing of many skills in one exercise. It helps develop reading and vocabulary comprehension. After the quote analysis scaffold is made, it can be used in the essay as a hook or concluding thought. We ended up doing around ten of these exercises. After writing the quote, provided from the teacher, this analysis was made from the following steps: The first thing was to do a research online about the author and make two to three sentences, on average, about who he was and what were his major contributions to society. Second, the students had to look for unknown words and their definition in the dictionary. After this, the third part was for the......

Experience as a Writer

...Experiences as a Writer Writing can be a good or bad experience; it all depends on the writer. People who are good writers have fewer problems than those who have trouble writing out their thoughts. I believe those who have a great mind of imagination are some of the best writers. My experiences in writing have always been a minimal, because writing is a difficult process for me. The problem I have with writing is expressing my ideas and thought in a concise and coherent manner. In the future, I hope to be able to improve tremendous at writing essays, research papers, and other writing assignments without very little to no errors. I hope to be a well-rounded writer when I complete this course. I begin writing when I was in the first grade, when my teacher showed me how to put words together to form sentences. The second grade is where I was showed how to write simple sentences. I was also shown how to correctly write sentences so that didn’t have any run-ons or fragments, on complete sentences. Eventually when I reached middle school I was able to write a complete paragraph, and term paper. Everything I have learned in school has helped me to be able to write resumes, reports at work, and other important things in my adult life. It is very important that my resumes and reports are written correctly, and my words are professional. It has helped me to elaborate and point out the important in my......

...field. In expect to use writing in my university career writing reports and essays, summarizing, and researching. In my professional life writing plays a major role especially in business. Business fields such as marketing, finance, and research need excellent writing skills to properly convey ideas and concepts. Types of writing in professional careers include resumes, company communications, emails, presentations, reports and visual aids. Professionals use factual statements, evidence and reasons for statements they made, which encourages readers to agree with them. Keeping a journal since junior high trained me to be more observant. Instead of paying attention to the negative side of things I pay attention to the positive side. Have you ever lost train of thought? My memory is improved by writing down my ideas in my journal. In my personal life writing also helps me express my thoughts. Sometimes I write down things from a lesson in my journal to help write more detailed statements. In writing an academic paper my goals are to write a paper that will be acceptable. Some papers are poorly written, which makes it harder for readers to understand your points. I want to write a paper that will be read and understood so I go back and look at rubrics to make sure my statements are as clear and precise as I can. Lastly, I want my essay to be free of errors. Using spell check, dictionaries, and thesaurus helps to prevent spelling, and punctuation errors. My biggest challenges......

Experiences as a Writer

...Experiences as a writer My experience as a writer is very limted. As a mechanic and seeing that this is my first time attending college I do not have much experience. The only time have to dedicate to writing is when I’m off from work. I am usually writing about my feelings for my loved ones in a journal. When at work I am required to write reports on the equipment and the functions of the machines. At school I am allowed to expand my knowledge for writing. My feelings towards writing are mixed. On one hand I enjoy writing but, because of my lack of knowledge and my busy schedule I do not have time to fully dedicated myself to it. To me in order to write u have to have a feeling towards it, and truly understand what you are doing. I believe that you cannot simply jump into writing it has to be learned over time and practice in order to become a good writer. My experience from writing comes from my journal entries that I try to write in every day. I believe that is going to help me become more adjusted to writing in a class room. My bad experiences with writing come from when I was in high school. I was not a very good writer and it showed in my grades. I do believe it’s because of I lacked the passion to write. So that taught me that whenever I pick a topic to write about it has to be sometime that I could relate to as closely as possible....

Metaphor of Me as a Writer

...individual with not only good foresight, but an individual with great intellectual skills and creativity. My writing skills have become a significant challenge for me, like my driving skills, which I believe worsen due to the Cheetah’s speed I have to encounter on the streets. I am accustoming to writing simple, non-descriptive, age appropriate pieces. Now I am expected to create fluent, thought provoking creations. How is this possible when I have to endure all spectrums of parts of speech? Writing is not only an act that I hate, but it is an act that I have to do almost every day in order to interact with the linguistic world. Despite the fact that I have been writing most of my life, I have not gotten any better than a blind man’s driving no matter how much effort I put into it. My writing has left much to be desired. There could be a guideline, an outline or clear directions and I would still find ways to create a questionable piece. Did he even understand what I am asking, or did he even see the topic? The questions the cops would ask me after pulling me over for my continued stupid mistakes I make while driving, “Are you not accustom to road signals or is it your understanding of the road code that needs more to be desired?” I spend time and time again trying to express in my writings what is required of me, just as I try to explain to the cops why I hit the pole or why I am in the fast lane going slowly. Repeated penalties and repeated bad grades have......

...When I look at myself as a writer, I never knew I could write like this. From grade school to high school I never really looked at myself as a really good writer. I doubted myself whenever a teacher said, “We are beginning another big paper.” I feared writing and never really gave my writing any thought. However, as I start college, I knew I would be assigned numerous amounts of papers. As I walked in the very first day of college I was scared. I thought I wouldn’t get anywhere because I thought I couldn’t write anything. Giving much thought into the whole writing process and having many people behind me is when I knew I could write something even if it was good or bad at first, I knew many signs of weaknesses and strengths would show through and im glad they did and some I didn't exspect. I have many weaknesses as a writer. One weakness in particular would be that I have writer's block. I will be able to begin a paper but never really know where to go with it. When I am writing I tend to get blocked with words to say. I don’t want to not sound academic so I have to sit for a while at my computer and think of words to say so sometimes even doing that I will still draw a blank I overthink sometimes and it distracts me.. Another weakness I feel I have is that I waste time. I tend to just sit at and i feel lost. That is a waste of time for me. I need to find a way where I can just sit and write an entire paper at one time and then revise it I like to free write and just like......

Becoming a Writer

...Russell bakers essay on becoming a writer stuck out to me in particular. I believe the reasoning behind this is his main emphasized point. Which was that English and literature itself was boring too him, however because he believed he had a skill for it, his desire to be unique with purpose was fulfilled. Ultimately the authors’ main intention in my own opinion was to compose an auto biography of sorts, to reminisce on his first step in becoming the person he is today. His audience is a little bit trickier to pick out, but if I had to put my finger on it, I would say without a doubt in my heart that his targeted audience was all the high school students who feel like English class is as bad as pulling teeth. He clearly intended to explain that he was no different than every other normal high school student, and then one day one assignment and one teacher, changed his entire future and outlook upon his own future. For this very reason he kept a very delightful tone throughout this writing. He almost conveyed a sense of wonder and joy at the very thought of that essay he wrote and the emotion he poured into it. Although the author had obviously plenty of emotions he was hoping to express through this essay, I feel obligated to shed light on my own. I feel pure happiness warming my heart and rushing through my chest and veins at the very basis of what happened in his story. To me, this story showed that everyone has a purpose and that with a little bit of open mindedness the......

...away for such a long time. She told me that she’ll pick me up as soon as she finishes her purchase. Both Grandma and she would sew innumerable dresses for Bua. Today, they had gone to buy some other supplies. Grand ma was with her too. They told me to wait after school and assured me that they would be there before time. I patiently waited and after a long time of baking under the unwanted vitamin D, I went inside and sat on the staircase. Schools have a peculiar feel to them. They always have staircases; I guess the makers know how exciting it is to run away from the institution once you’re done for the day. There were several parents who’d come by to bring back their kids. While hoping that Ma would come sooner, it occurred to me that I had noticed Aunty. Misra Aunty I think was her name; not that it was of any consequence then, as she was in this great tussle to drag her daughter’s hand in what seemed like an unwanted stretch of the limb. She somehow threw in a glance! Man! I am dead meat. I hope she doesn't notice me. I wonder what caught her fancy, my dress or the constant dragging of her daughter, who seemed quite forlorn. She looked like she was tired of dragging her with one hand, so she chose to drag her with both hands. She looked like she believed it would be worth the trouble or perhaps she did it to gain momentum of some sort. Dolly simply refused to let go and Misra aunty did not budge either. It was then that she approached me! I persisted, pleaded, tried......

Freedom Writers

...Freedom Writers Self-concept is the entirety of one's beliefs and attitudes towards their personal existence. Many people, depending on life experience, feel they have superiority or are at a disadvantage because of the group they fall into. This is seen in the movie Freedom Writers, each and every student has their own perspective on their own self-concept. These students end up finding similarities between each other because they have some sort of connection but only find it once they learn and open up about their struggles. There are many concepts of the self that can be found throughout the entire film.   Empathy is one of the major concepts of The Freedom Writers.  Empathy is the ability to put yourself into another person’s experience and to completely understand the other’s thoughts, feelings and way of being. (P.78) An example of empathy is when Mrs. G reads the journals and can really put herself into their shoes and really understand their individual experiences.  If Mrs. G didn’t have a strong sense of empathy for the students, she never would have been able to help them conquer their personal demons.               Mrs. G used a strategy called identity management to connect with the students.  Identity management is when communicators use certain strategies to influence the way others view them. (P.81) An example of this is when Mrs. G plays Tupac in an effort to relate to the kids in the class.  She hopes to have them see that they may have something in common...

Women Writers

...Those amazing women writers I decided to do this topic because so much information I found online connecting to it surprised me so much. I have seen that much of the research papers common opinion was ”Women writers can never write as excellent as men.” Is that true? In my opinion, these thoughts are too narrow and bigoted. The people who have this opinion probably already have their own preconceived notions before they’ve made their judgment. I know there are more men writers than female writers, but you can’t deny that there are a lot of excellent female writers in this world too. Some of them are very famous and the fictions they created are so popular nowadays. They affect countless reader’s minds and how they chosed their next books. For example, Agatha Christie’s << Murder on the Orient Express>> and Charlotte Brontë’s << Jane Eyre>>, are better than most books which are in the same genre. We can never ignore what women writers did to help build the history of world literature and their amazing fictions. They have their own advantages and disadvantages. One big positive quality that female writers have is that they can describe their character’s feelings and minds very well. Most of the time they can express feelings with their pens far better than men. Kegan Gardines believes that these differences in experience will be apparent in the writing. She gives examples of the characteristics of women’s writing that differ from men’s writing:......

Experience as a Writer

...will make me a better writer long term, which will turn this weakness into a strength of mine. I do consider writing a concern of mine. I find myself getting uncomfortable when I have to write. First, I have a hard time starting; I just don’t know where to begin. Secondly, in my opinion, I came up through a poor educational school system in New Orleans. I believe I was not taught the proper way to speak English, nor was I able to write it proficiently. Being a native from New Orleans, I spoke with an unusual tongue that resembles street slang or jargon. I then found myself writing how I spoke. Another problem that I have a hard time with is properly identifying grammatical errors. Since I cannot remember the rules or retain the information to correct errors, I will miss it in my writing or someone else’s writing for that matter. I will begin writing in one form and tense then shift to another form and tense and not notice a difference. This is one reason why I get uneasy about writing. One day while I was at work, the hotel had a pipe burst in a guest room. The room filled with hot water, causing major damage to the guest’s belonging and electronics. We handled the situation appropriately, but as the Front Office Manager, I had to write her a letter of apology. My letter was about one page long and I had it placed in her room while she was out. So, later that evening while she was at dinner, I approached her to follow up on a few things. The first thing she said to me......

Experiance as a Writer

...Experiences as a Writer Derrick Wiley Dr. Lynda Mubarak English 090 7/15/2012 Experiences as a Writer I have had a lot of experiences as a writer during my enlistment in the military. As a corporal in the United States army one of my job requirements as an upcoming NCO was to have good writing skills. With the responsibility of being a mentor over soldiers it was very important to write what we call counseling statements, also known as (DA form 4856). A counseling statement had to be written at the end of every month or when the soldier did something out of army regulations. If a soldier was up for promotion or demotion the company commander would review the counseling’s to make a final decision, correct spelling, time stamps, and perfect word selection must be correct or the counseling would be thrown out. [This is a great way to explain what a counseling statement is and how it is used in the military. Nice work, Derrick!] Being a good writer in the military could lead up to rewards, special jobs with the commander, good criticism, and other great things. When it comes to being a bad writer in the military various problems could be coming your way such as these: bad criticism, loss of upcoming promotions, and demotion. Bad writing skills could also confuse the supervisor who is reading the report, or even cause confusion on the point that needs to come across to readers. Writing in the military is a part of the backbone of the army...
