Professors of Filipino breaking bad over CHED memo
By MARK ANGELES June 14, 2014 12:32pm (Updated 12:39 p.m., June 15, 2014) College professors who teach Filipino and supporters of the Filipino language in general are contesting a Commission on Higher Education (CHED) memorandum that will remove the teaching of Filipino from the General Education Curriculum (GEC).

According to the CHED Memorandum (CMO) No. 20, series of 2013, Filipino will no longer be part of the GEC by 2016 and the teaching of Filipino at the college level will be limited to Filipino majors and Education in Filipino majors.

The CHED justified its removal of college-level Filipino by saying that the subject would be covered in Grades 11 and 12 under the new K-12 curriculum. “Hangga't maari, pagdating mo sa college, mga major subjects na lang,” explained CHED Executive Director Julito Vitriolo.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts' National Committee on Language and Translation (NCCA-NCLT), however, believes otherwise. Last May 23, its members unanimously signed a resolution asking the GEC be revised again, but this time to include nine mandatory units of Filipino for all courses at the tertiary level.

The Pambansang Samahan sa Linggwistika at Literaturang Filipino, Ink. (PSLLF), an organization that promotes the use of Filipino, has thrown its support behind the NCCA-NCLT resolution by promoting a change.org petition which asks the CHED and Congress to include the nine Filipino units in the GEC. The online and written petition letters were initiated by De La Salle University Filipino professor David Michael San Juan.

According to the petition, the CHED memorandum violates Article XIV, Section 6 of the 1987 Constitution, which says “the Government shall take steps to initiate and sustain the use of Filipino as a medium of official communication and as language of…...

Organizational behavior is referred as a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals groups, and structure has on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organization`s effectiveness. `You can teach smart people anything` are the words spoken by Microsoft founder Bill Gates who believes that the IQ score of an individual is more important than the experience he got, especially when he or she is applying for a job. It is true tha the greatest asset of any successful company is the combined intelligence of the workforce working for it. A company never hires an individual just because there is a vacancy place that needs to be filled, or the applier is highly experienced and intelligent. The fact is that the company hires an employee to who its see as a navigator, who will follow to the path of success. Thus, it is important to draw an attention to the intelligence of an individual rather than just hire him on the basis of his experience. In any work environment, there are various types of people who differ from each to another on the base of skin color, height,......

...him to storm a government office in protest, something he had never done before. As a result, Old man Oyster and his son end up in jail. This would have been prevented if Oyster's son was simply assigned the tasks he was capable of. However, racism and prejudice stood in Charlie Oyster's way and caused for regrettable and violent actions to be taken on behalf of his father. "Why, You Reckon?" examines the desperation of details two poverty-stricken African- Americans seeking food and shelter on a cold night. An exchange between the two men occurs- "Man, ain't you hungry? Didn't I see you down there at the charities today, not gettin' nothin'- like me?" (Hughes 66). The two African American protagonists agree and later show anger at the white people; "These here white folks come up to Harlem spendin' forty or fifty bucks… and don't care nothin' 'bout you and me." (Hughes 66) One of the protagonists suggests to the other that they rob a white man for money, as they have nothing to lose. Once the white man is captured and robbed, he exclaims "Gee, this was exciting." (Hughes 70) The African American says that he would be happy if he had the wealth of a white man and later muses "What do you suppose is the matter with rich white folks? Why you reckon they ain't happy?" (Hughes 70) The two African- American men would be overjoyed if they simply had the means of necessity- food and shelter. However, they don't; thus their desperation is the sole cause for their violent crime.......

Analysis of Zora Neale Hurston's Spunk

...“Looka theah folkses!” is what Elijah Mosley states to the others in the store. This is the first indication that the characters in this short story are not the most educated, and are probably from some small backwoods town. We quickly get confirmation of this when we learn that he is alerting them that Spunk Banks, a giant, brown-skinned man, “who aint skeered of nothin’ on God’s green footstool”, is sauntering up the one street in the village, with a small pretty woman clinging lovingly to his arm. Clearly, the store is where people hang out, and everyone knows that the woman with Spunk is Lena Kanty, Joe’s wife. Coming from a large city, I would not expect everyone to know each other, so seeing a couple walking down the street would not be significant to me. In this context however, I understand that something is not right and trouble is coming. When Joe walked in to the store, the talking ceased; the men looked at each other and winked. “Say, Joe, how’s everything up yo’ way? How’s yo’ wife?” asked Elijah. Spoken like a friend, but it is clear that he is trying to start some mess. “Aw “Lige, you oughtn’t to do nothin’ like that” Walter grumbled. This dialogue makes the conflict between Spunk and Joe very clear. Not only does Joe know that his wife is going out with Spunk, but everybody in the town knows. This is a brilliant way to draw the reader into the story; we feel bad for Joe. His pride is at stake and he has no alternative but to take some action against......

I believe the growth is reasonable as technology becomes more evolved, starting at 2,300 to four billion in over a 40 year difference. The growth seems surprisingly fast because in just half that time 42 million was reached. I think in the next 10-15 years, 100 billion would be able to fit on a single chip. Or even sooner because nowadays there are more sources and the growth of technology can only become more hi-tech and advanced where even reaching a transistor count of one trillion can be reached within the next 20 years I believe....

Please check with your instructor to see what he or she prefers.   A reading response consists of:   1. the statement or idea that you are responding to placed in its proper context--this may mean providing background information about the article itself; 2. your reaction to the statement or idea; 3. a connection between what you have read and experienced in your own life   The following is a clear example of a student writer responding to the actions of a character in a work. This essay, written by Jill Matthews, appears in the 2005 issue Project Discovery. Calvin Jefferson: All the Right Stuff by Jill Matthews “B y changin’ my words? Thass nothin…nothin! I got to know them big ideas…and which way to git em down…” These words are spoken by Calvin Jefferson in “Open Admissions” by Shirley Lauro. A college student, Calvin can barely read or write. For this reason alone, most would think Calvin is not college material. However, I believe that Calvin Jefferson is “college material” because he is a motivated learner, he has problem-solving skills, and he has perseverance. Motivation to learn is important for a student to stay successful in college. Determined to receive help from his professor, Calvin shows his motivation to learn. After confronting his teacher about a B he unfairly receives, Calvin complains: “I stood up there didn’ hardly know the sense a anythin I read,......

Of Mice and Men Monologue George

...The sound will never escape my damn memory. The sound of the bullet as it flies from the barrel. Lennie’s body crunching the crisp leaves by the river. It brings a tear to my eyes but I ain’t no sissy. But to hell with it, if I ain't of done it ain't nobody else but that bastard Curley who would've shot him. I spend most of my time in the ranch talking to Candy, always lookin' real sad. He has nothin' in life. It seems like his life parallels mine. Slim always seems to be lookin' out for me but he don't say nothin. He knows its best not to. Slims a smart guy. The fellas all go down the bar in Soledad. But I'm never really up for it. Instead I stay in the barn and drown in guilt and remorse. Ha, funny that I say drown. I remember when I told Lennie to jump off the bridge into the lake and he did. Stupid fella couldn't swim and I never realised. I felt guilty as hell at that point too, but he still thanked me when I let him out. Sure, I guess Lennie was a burden to me, but he gave me good company. He was my partner, but now he's gone I feel so lonely. Even with slim, candy an the other guys. He was my best friend. We went around together for a long time. He irritated the hell out of me, he was so damn stupid. But he was the only friend I had, and he wasn’t a bad fella. But I killed him. Shot him straight in the head jus' like like Carlson did to Candy’s dog. Ol' candy told me 'I should have shot that dog myself, George.' Woulda been better than having some stranger do...

...Cash-Less Policy Experts believe the cash-less Policy would curb corruption but may increase price level in the short – term By Goke Awoyemi The Managing Director of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Mr. Bismark Rewane, has said that the cash-less policy the central Bank of Nigeria will increase price level in the short term. The policy commenced in Lagos last month. There has been debate by different observers of Nigeria’s financial system over the effects the cash-less policy and fuel subsidy removal will have on inflation. While some observers have argued that inflation rate will shoot up to an average of 20 per cent in 2012, others have said the rise in inflation rate will only exist in the short term. Rewane said in a report entitled, “Fuel Subsidy Saga,” delivered at the Lagos Business School, that one of the macro-economic effects of the cash-less policy is that price level would increase in the short-run, adding that, “inflation could average 12 to 14 per cent in 2012 due to subsidy impact.” He said, “Short-run effect is that money supply will decline by 50 per cent to N2.5tn and broad money supply (M2) will increase to N18.5tn. Velocity of circulation will increase due to transaction settlement speed. Bank float levels will reduce correspondingly.” Rewane pointed out that some global issues would affect Nigeria, saying that, “African currencies including the naira will come under increasing pressure. The recession will reduce aid and......
