Different Job Search Behaviors and Sources

2

Abstract Both theoretical models of job search and empirical research findings suggest that job search behavior is not a unidimensional construct. This chapter addresses the multidimensionality of job search behavior and provides a systematic review of the different job search behaviors and sources studied in the job search literature and their relationships with antecedent variables and employment outcomes. Organized within three major dimensions (effort-intensity, contentdirection, temporal-persistence), job search effort and intensity, job search strategies, preparatory and active job search behaviors, formal and informal job sources, specific job search behaviors, job search quality, job search dynamics, and job search persistence are discussed. This review strongly suggests that considering all the dimensions of job search behavior is essential for understanding job search success in both practice and research, resulting in a number of key implications for job seekers and employment counselors as well as crucial directions for future research.

...Behavior Source BSHS/311 January 28, 2012 Michael Phillips Behavior Source of Help This past week’s assignment asked me to visit with a program facility that deals with human services that use behavioral tools and cognitive behavior approaches to the issue the clients face. This past week I visited the Battered Woman's Shelter of Paulding County, Georgia. This group houses woman and their children if they have any. They come from homes where there was abuse that took place. The abuse considered is verbal, mental, and physical. Sometimes only one takes place and in other homes all three forms of abuse takes place. There are 159 people currently living at this facility. The program is run by West Ridge Church. Like I mentioned before it is only for women and children if they have them. The counselors that work with these woman and children are certified through the state of Georgia and are on staff at West Ridge Church. They let the church know of the program but the facility is hidden and not everyone knows where it is located. The goal of the facility is to let the woman and children know that they are not the one in the wrong and help them through the treatments to realize this. Not all the clients work and heal at the same time so the process varies on the person and the situations that they came from. They have therapy both group and single for the women and children and there is also therapy to grow through as a family. The children of the facility all get to...

...Locating jobs Common methods of job hunting are: Finding a job through a friend or an extended business network, personal network, or online social network service Using an employment website Job listing search engines Looking through the classifieds in newspapers Using a private or public employment agency or recruiter Looking on a company's web site for open jobs, typically in its applicant tracking system Going to a job fair Using professional guidance such as outplacement services that give training in writing a résumé, applying for jobs and how to be successful at interview. Visiting an organisation to find out whether it is recruiting staff or will be doing so in the near future. As of 2010, less than 10% of U.S. jobs are filled through online ads.[1] Researching the employers Many job seekers research the employers to which they are applying, and some employers see evidence of this as a positive sign of enthusiasm for the position or the company, or as a mark of thoroughness. Information collected might include open positions, full name, locations, web site, business description, year established, revenues, number of employees, stock price if public, name of chief executive officer, major products or services, major competitors, and strengths and weaknesses. Networking Contacting as many people as possible is a highly effective way to find a job. It is estimated that 50% or higher of all jobs are found......

...In researching SCANS, I found a bit of interesting information in the O*NET Resource Center. You can select different career exploration tools such as: ability profiler, computerized interest profiler, career exploration tool, work importance locator and Interest Profiler. O*NET is the nation’s primary source of occupational information. I liked that this database contains hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors. It is perfect for me because I am looking to change careers and while I have an idea of the career direction I want to go, I don’t have a specific job title in mind. This search database will open the door to descriptions of numerous and different travel occupations even some I never heard of. The Interest Profiler helps you discover different types of work activities and occupations that you might like and find exciting. The other career tool I found to be very useful was the Work Importance Profiler, which helps you determine what is important to you in a job. One area, I looked into was Event Planning and found some interesting job titles and descriptions. If you are called an Event Planner, the requirements depend on the experience level and a bachelor degree is strongly preferred, but not necessary if the experience is there. The higher the job level such as Assistant Director, Director, Executive Event Planner the higher the experience and education level needed; some require a masters’ degree in addition to the work experience. ......

...While looking at jobs on Indeed.com I was able to find a couple of positions that I found interesting once I get my degree and also my certifications. One position that I found was Network Engineer 1 in Orlando, Fl. The qualifications are a bachelor’s degree or 2 years of experience or a combo of both. The position entails working on networks to ensure smooth and reliable operations. Monitor network performance and troubleshoot as needed. I feel I can apply for this position as I have had some experience with networks in the past. I and working on getting my certifications in Network+ and CCNA. These are great certifications to have when applying for a job in networking. I don’t think I would have any questions before I would apply for the position. I would make sure the company was a good company to work for. I would do research on their company beforehand. The pro of applying for this job would be that it is in the field that I am looking for and the con I think would be that I would have to move from my current area. My wife and I have come to an understanding that if I am going to pursue a career in computers that we would need to move to an area that has a lot of corporations around like a big city. We moved from NY and we don’t want to go back. We would have to look in Atlanta, Charlotte, Jacksonville, or more out west. Another position that I was able to locate which was in my area of Hilton Head Island, SC is IT specialist Jr. they require a CCNA, A+, Network+,......

Literature Search and Critical Review

...Literature Search & Critical Review Jennifer Burkey Eastern Michigan University The adoption of electronic medical records systems is one of very current relevance in nursing practice. In our local region there are many hospital systems that are in the process, or have just completed the process, of implementing an integrated electronic medical record system. This drew me to perform a literature search on the subject of electronic medical records use in nursing practice. I performed this search using the search terms electronic medical records in the CINAHL database and limited my search to English language research articles. I arranged the resulting articles with the newest listed first and scanned through the article titles for those relating to nursing practice. The purpose of this paper is to critically review one of the articles I found during my literature search. I chose the article “Factors influencing nurses’ intentions toward the use of mobile electronic medical records” written by Hsu, Liu, Weng & Chen. Article Summary According to Hsu, et al. (2013), “The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing nurses’ intentions toward the use of mobile electronic medical records, based on the Theory of Diffusion Innovations.” (p. 124) Hsu et al. first went through a literature search of their own to provide definitions of some key terms needed for the study. Mobile electronic medicals records (MEMR) was defined as “an EMR that......

...Awad 1 Awad Abu Awad Prof Frias English 015 25 February 2016 Take Off a Tie Put On a Skill These days, finding a job can be an irritating process for new graduates due to life changes that has been made throughout the past years regarding businesses in several majors. It is terrifying to see how 23% of the college students spend 2-6 months searching for a job after their college graduation. After many days and nights of hard work, the dreams of sitting in a chair at a well-known company can turn into thoughts of regret written all over job advertisements in the Tuesday newspaper in a basement. Job hunting can only be as difficult as it seems when recent graduation takes role in the lack of experience, credit points become a daily issue due to the lack of finance management and unemployment becomes a main fear of a job searcher. Changes are made every year, new graduates should be taught to deal with these changes to be fully prepared for what the future awaits. Degrees are meaningless as years of practice and experience become one of the top requirements for an interview of a certain field. Nowadays, many companies’ top priority is success. One of the reasons behind failure in a business is not the idea of repeated mistakes, but the lack of experience. This is the reason behind marking degrees as a meaningless tool and instead accepting skills and years of experience as predators of success....
