EC311 Introduction to Project Management
Week 1 Lesson 1 Writing Assignment

The job responsibilities of a Project Manager are unlimited. Their duties include being a referee, brainstormer, scheduler, organizer, planner, and many more. The Project Manager’s responsibilities begin as soon as the task is assigned and are not completed until all phases of the project are complete and released to the client. Not only does the Project Manager have to maintain the concrete aspects of the project, but they also have to ensure the other members of the project team are properly maintaining the tasks they are assigned.

Social skills are a necessity for the Project Manager in order to maintain a professional and friendly atmosphere for all members of the project team. If there is a friendlier atmosphere, it is more likely all employees will complete their tasks as needed, with a higher standard. It is also very important for the Project Manager to be punctual. There are going to be deadlines in any project. In order to satisfy the client by having the project completed in a timely manner, it is necessary for the Project Manager to be punctual and have a good sense of time management. Project Managers must also be able to multitask. There are several components of every project that require attention. There will be phases that must be worked on simultaneously, which will require the ability to work on more than one thing at a time.

If a Project Manager doesn’t take criticism very well, they would be less likely to excel at their job. There will always be things that are not liked by the client or other members of the project team. For this reason, it is necessary to be able to take the criticism and change that aspect to include what is preferred by the client and other team members. Another thing that could hinder a Project Manger could be creativity. There are many…...

Ec311 Intro to Project Management

...Understanding Project Management Organizations Organizational Influences There are several factors that influence a projects success. Two that come to mind are Organizational Structure and Organizational Culture. The way in which your organization is structured can determine if your project will be successful. For example, is your organizational customer-focused and are resources shared across divisions? Organizational Culture plays a huge role if whether or not a project manager is successful. Such as, if the mindset is that of “nothing ever gets done around here” than the project manager (PM) will not receive the full support that is required. In addition, many organizations have processes in place, but no one follows them. Technological Enhancements To be competitive, project managers (PMs) need to be aware of future technologies. Software advancements are very important today. A project manager can deliver customer goods or services rapidly if the organization has the most efficient and effective software available. Furthermore, integrated systems are becoming more significant for centralized information (i.e., resources) Political Environment A project manager should seek to understand the political elements of his or her environment. Unfortunately, a PM cannot completely avoid its influence. A project manager should know who will support them and who will not or what are the boundaries of risk-taking as well as keep key players informed.......

...The Expert Says Question: What role does the Critical Path play in EV Analysis? The Expert Says: In our example the positive schedule variance indicates the project is ahead of schedule. However, the critical path for this project is A – C – E and requires additional evaluation. Delays on the critical path will impact the end date and deserve special attention. Here task A is on the CP and is significantly (10%) behind schedule. Be careful when analyzing project totals for SV and SPI as the Critical Path is not directly taken into consideration! The Expert Says Question: Should the PM use slack at will? The Expert Says: Slack is a great tool for the Project Manager to help manage the project schedule and complete the project on time. Slack is really "flexibility" in the schedule along the non-critical paths which can be utilized when required to compensate for unforeseen circumstances. Slack should be used with discretion because using slack will decrease the "flexibility" and move non-critical paths closer to becoming critical. The Expert Says Question: If we know how far we can crash all the tasks, why don't we just crash them at them all the way and avoid working the iterative process? The Expert Says: Be careful not to shorten the tasks on the critical path too much, otherwise we may not be spending our money efficiently. In the diagram below, the "all crashed" line shows us by adding resources to all tasks, we can finish in 22 days instead of 29 days. By......

Between the fixed costs of tasks scheduled and the allocated resource hours that are utilized during the ‘Planning Phase’, we are looking at a budget of $283,882 thus far.
