Here we will take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of social networks to describe its condition in the future. Charlene Li is an influential leader and analyst on emerging technologies. She is the co-author of a business best-seller book Groundswell: Winning In A World Transformed By Social Technologies published by the Harvard Press in May 2008. She often blogs about her experiences online. In one of her blogs, “The Future of Social Networks: Social Networks Will Be Like Air,” she describes her position on the outlook of social networks: In the future, social networks will be like air. They will be anywhere and everywhere we need and want them to be. And also, without that social context in our connected lives,......

Grant Department of Radio/TV/Film, The University of Texas at Austin Wei-wei Huang Department of Mass Communication, Fu-jen Catholic University, Taipei, Taiwan Cross-cultural communication scholars have looked at effects of interpersonal communication and both ethnic and host mass media uses on the acculturation behavior of immigrants for a long time. The present study employs an important network analysis concept, the social influence of alters on ego, in the field of cross-cultural communication. Using measures of alters' acculturation, English- and ethnic-language media uses, and years of residence in the U.S., a model is proposed and tested upon a sample of international students from a college campus. The results indicate that the alters' acculturation plays a central role in the pattern of relationships. INTRODUCTION To answer questions such as "what happens when individuals move from one culture to another" and "why are some immigrants more successful than others in adapting a new environment," social scientists have long employed the concept of acculturation to explain the process through which immigrants adapt themselves to the norms and values of the host culture (Gordon, 1964; Padilla, 1980; Gudykunst & Kim, 1984; Kim, 1977, 1988). ...Social Networks M’Tisha Garnett INF 103 Computer Literacy Prof. Christopher Newcomb December 15, 20113 Social Networks Social Networks such as Myspace have been around for several years, but it limited the amount of information one could display to the world. But when Facebook surfaced in 2007 it trampled the Myspace site and brought about a different way for people to communicate. People were able to express themselves to the world, post pictures, and videos. It became bigger than the original reason for its creation which was for college students to reconnect and talk about homework, etc. Now we have sites like Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn that allow people to express themselves through words, pictures, or for business connections. But there is also a negative side of social networking, such as bullying, jail time for posting illegal activity, robberies, and possible job disqualification due to a post. The Influence of Social Networking Sites The media often portrays social networkers as social misfits more interested in chatting with virtual friends than making real ones. ...introduced in 2003, it was the first real social networking site. It broke the mold of how people could communicate, find “lost” friends, and keep track of friends and family members. Once they became successful, they started settling into a sustaining technology mode in order to improve their bottom line. Mark Zuckerberg and friends started Facebook in 2004. Instead of aiming for sustaining technology, they opted to go for the disruptive technology. They listened to suggestions from users and offered what users wanted, not what managers thought users wanted. By allowing users to customize their personal Facebook pages in virtually any way they wanted (as long as it is not considered inappropriate, threatening, or dangerous), Facebook quickly gained fans and users. They soon surpassed the success and level of users of Myspace. Knowing exactly what was done to surpass Myspace; Zuckerberg has kept Facebook in the disruptive technology mode. This keeps interest high, users happy, and the money rolling in. As long as Facebook stays on the cutting edge of disruptive technology, they should remain successful. However, disruptive technology lends itself to new entrants into the marketplace. Basically, new users can throw anything into the ring and try anything to start a new business. They have nothing to lose by running on the edge. Eventually one or more of these upstarts will hit upon an even more appealing version of social networking than Myspace. At that time,......

...computer networking to facilitate newly improved forms of computer-mediated social interaction was suggested early on.[8] Efforts to support social networks via computer-mediated communication were made in many early online services, including Usenet[9], ARPANET, LISTSERV, and bulletin board services (BBS). Many prototypical features of social networking sites were also present in online services such as America Online, Prodigy, CompuServe, and The WELL[10]. Early social networking on the World Wide Web began in the form of generalized online communities such as Theglobe.com (1995),[11] Geocities (1994) and Tripod.com (1995). Many of these early communities focused on bringing people together to interact with each other through chat rooms, and encouraged users to share personal information and ideas via personal webpages by providing easy-to-use publishing tools and free or inexpensive webspace. Some communities - such as Classmates.com - took a different approach by simply having people link to each other via email addresses. In the late 1990s, user profiles became a central feature of social networking sites, allowing users to compile lists of "friends" and search for other users with similar interests. New social networking methods were developed by the end of the 1990s, and many sites began to develop more advanced features for users to find and manage friends.[12] This newer generation of social networking sites began to flourish with the emergence of SixDegrees.com in......
