Report on SQUID

Squid is a caching proxy for Web supporting HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and more. It improves response times by caching, reusing frequently-requested web pages and it reduces bandwidth. Squid makes a great server accelerator and has extensive access controls. It runs on most available operating systems, including Windows and is licensed under GNU GPL. Squid is used by hundreds of Internet Providers world-wide to provide their users with the best possible web access. Squid caches frequently-used content to save bandwidth and optimises the data flow between client and server. It can also route content requests to servers in a wide variety of ways to build cache server hierarchies which optimise network throughput. Thousands of web-sites around the Internet use Squid to drastically increase their content delivery. It can improve delivery speeds to clients and reduce your server. Squid can also be used to deliver content from around the world, copying only the content being used, rather than inefficiently copying everything. Squid advanced content routing information allows you to load balance request via a variety of web servers and to build a content clusters to route. Many of us are using squid without us even knowing it. Some companies have embedded Squid in their home or firewall devices. Some people use Squid in large scale proxy installations to speed up broadband and dialup internet access. Squid is being increasingly used in content delivery architectures to deliver static and streaming video/audio to internet users worldwide.

...mussels those ingredient will be for the stock. For the paella you will need, saffron, kosher salt, pepper, extra virgin olive oil, extra large shrimps, lobster tail, small squid cleaned and cut into 1 inch pieces, smoked paprika, 4 medium tomatoes minced, 1-2 red bell pepper cored and chopped, 1 onion minced, crab stock, 2 ½ cups of short grain rice preferably Valencia, bomba or calasparra, dozen small clams, parsley, lemon wedges, and 8 cloves of garlic minced. All of these ingredients give the flavor but the saffron is one of the most important if not the most important ingredient to really give the dish its original paella flavor. Without it, it seems like something is missing. Make sure that more than 8 cloves of garlic is not used or that to much salt is applied or else it will give the dish a very salty taste and to much garlic could end up upsetting the stomach. The lobster will be one of the last ingredients to be applied along with the shrimp and mussels. At the application level. Cooking paella in the pan with seafood. Whale Rising

...Whale rising Not three metres from where I’m standing on the starboard side of the sailboat, six very large female sperm whales are doing something few humans have ever witnessed. The captain of our 40-foot cutter is Dalhousie University biologist Hal Whitehead, one of the pre-eminent experts on sperm whales. It’s mid-afternoon on a sunny day in Mexico’s Gulf of California, a 1,000-kilometre-long body of water famous for its biodiversity. The gulf’s strong tides create a cool upwelling of nutrients that support countless species of marine life, such as snappers, sardines and sharks, as well as that fierce mass of tentacles known as the Humboldt squid. Sperm whales hunt these squid year-round-they dive kilometres under the surface, pinpoint the squid with their sonar and snap them into their large and toothy grins. For the past five days, Whitehead and four crew members-including two Ph.D. students named Armando Manolo Ãlvarez Torres and Catalina Gomez-have been shadowing the sperm whales around the clock. They track their underwater echolocation pings on the hydrophone by night, and observe and photograph the animals by day. In many ways Whitehead’s approach is that of an old-fashioned behavioural scientist. While younger whale researchers tend to collect data using implants and satellite tracking, Whitehead still prefers following whales in person. By watching who spends time with whom doing what, he can extract insights about their social structure. Until now, the......

...deuterostomes. Each group includes distinctive features of embryology, reviewed on pages 660-661 in your textbook. Among the most distinctive features is one related to embryonic development and adult body orientation. In early development of animals, cells undergo dramatic movement, called gastrulation, that involves in-folding of cell layers which produces an opening called a blastopore. In protostomes, the embryonic blastopore eventually becomes the mouth; in deuterostomes the embryonic blastopore eventually becomes the anus. Phylum Mollusca The first group of protostomes we will examine are the Molluscs, a huge phylum comprising over 110,000 living species. Molluscs include gastropods (snails and slugs), bivalves (clams), cephalopods (squid, and octopi), and chitons. The mollusc body is composed of a muscular foot, visceral mass, containing the major organs, and a mantle that covers the visceral mass. The nervous system is comprised of ganglia connected by nerve cords. All molluscs have a shell secreted by the mantle, although in some groups, like the octopi, the shell is inconspicuous. The coelom is usually reduced to a sac surrounding the heart, gonad, and nephridia. Many molluscs possess a specialized feeding structure called a radula that contains rows of teeth for rasping (Figure 4). In some classes, the head/foot region develops a set of tentacles. The foot is usually involved in locomotion, digging, or attachment. We will concentrate on representative species......

...Ocean (South Pole Ocean or Antarctic Ocean) and the North Pacific Ocean. They are generally absent from the North Atlantic Ocean, althoughfossil remains show they once occurred there too and occasional vagrants are encountered. Albatrosses are colonial, nesting for the most part on remote oceanic islands, often with several species nesting together. Pair bonds between males and females form over several years, with the use of ritualized dances, and will last for the life of the pair. A breeding season can take over a year from laying to fledging, with a single egg laid in each breeding attempt. Albatrosses are highly efficient in the air, using dynamic soaring and slope soaring to cover great distances with little exertion. They feed on squid, fish, and krill by either scavenging, surface seizing, or diving. The albatrosses are usually regarded as falling into four genera, but there is disagreement over the number of species. The four genera are the great albatrosses (Diomedea), the mollymawks (Thalassarche), the North Pacific albatrosses (Phoebastria), and the sooty albatrosses or sooties (Phoebetria). Of the 21 species of albatrosses recognized by the IUCN, 19 are threatened with extinction. Numbers of albatrosses have declined in the past due to harvesting for feathers, but today the albatrosses are threatened by introduced species such as rats and feral cats that attack eggs, chicks and nesting adults; by pollution; by a serious decline in fish stocks in many regions......

End of the World

...This film, written and directed by Noah Baumback, takes place in Park Slope Brooklyn 1986. Some critics claim that the film reflects the writer’s personal experience of his parents divorce. Both were involved in the literary field. The film was cited as a letter of hate towards the writer’s own father. While the film is ostensibly about a divorce and a family in crisis it is in principal a sensitive coming of age story primarily from the perspective of a 16-year-old adolescent. It is also a fascinating portrayal of the obstacles that a parent with narcissistic features can present in the child’s struggle for independence. The Squid and the Whale is about divisions, about clashing forces; the mother and father, the child and parent, the intellectual and the philistine, the appearance of things and their true nature. Underlying each of these conflicts and every scene in the film is the battle between cynical detachment and vulnerability. The opening lines “Me and Mom vs. You and Dad sets the stage for an excessively competitive doubles tennis. Younger son Frank sides with Mom where older brother Walter proudly joins the father who gives some questionable advice regarding her backstroke. Competitive games are repeated throughout the film’ boxing, ping-pong. The fiercest competition is the literary competition to publish that both parents are engaged in. In this area the father condescendingly tries to give advise for his wife to improve her writing. Characters ...

Case in Point

...CASE STUDY: HOW HUMANS HAVE AFFECTED THE ANTARCTIC FOOD WEB Although the icy waters around Antarctica may seem an inhospitable environment, a complex food web is found there. The base of the food web consists of microscopic, photosynthetic algae present in vast numbers in the well-lit, nutrient-rich water. A huge population of herbivores—tiny shrimp like krill—eat these marine algae. Krill, in turn, support a variety of larger animals. A major consumer of krill is the baleen whale, which filters krill out of the frigid water. Baleen whales include blue whales, humpback whales, and right whales. Squid and fishes also consume krill in great quantities. These, in turn, are eaten by other carnivores: toothed whales such as the sperm whale, elephant seals and leopard seals, king penguins and emperor penguins, and birds such as the albatross and the petrel. Humans have had an impact on the Antarctic food web as they have had on most other ecosystems. Before the advent of whaling, baleen whales consumed huge quantities of krill. Until a global ban on hunting large whales was enacted in 1986, whaling steadily reduced the number of large baleen whales in Antarctic waters. As a result, of fewer whales eating krill, more krill became available for other krill-eating animals, whose populations increased. Now that commercial whaling is regulated, it is hoped that the number of large baleen whales will slowly increase, and that appears to be the case for some species. However, the......
