Questions such as “How does vision work?” seem somewhat interesting, but no more interesting than thousands of other questions. It’s like someone asking you whether you want to know about the history of guitar making. “I don’t know; maybe. Is it interesting?” Truthfully, “How does vision work?” is a bad question because it’s too general. In cognitive psychology, as in most fields, the devil is in the details, but that’s where the fun is, too. Vision, attention, and memory become interesting only when you pose more specific questions about them. This book poses questions about the mind and describes the answers cognitive psychologists have uncovered. The first thing we have to decide, then, is which questions to ask—how to get more specific than “How do we see?” You’ll find that the questions we ask are deeply influenced by assumptions we make about the mind and, indeed, assumptions about what it is to be human. It seems obvious that it would be better not to make assumptions when we are just starting to study the mind. Therefore, the first question to take up is Why make assumptions? ...A Great Story I read the books A Child Called It, The Lost Boy, and A Man Named Dave. The reason I choose these books is because they are true stories which keeps me interested. From the beginning it had me hooked. I had to keep reading because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I learned some things about these books but one thing stood out to me the most and that is how the legal system was very different back then than it is now. I believe Dave Pelzer is a very strong individual to be able to survive what he went through and I think it is great that he has become the person he is today. David James (Dave) Pelzer was born December 29th 1960 in San Francisco California. He is an American Author, best known for his 1995 memoir of childhood abuse, “A Child Called It”. Dave is born 3rd out of 5 boys. Dave wrote in his book that as a child, he was continually abused, mistreated, and beaten by his mother, who thought of it as a game. His teachers stepped in and on March 1973 Dave Pelzer was placed in foster care. He joined the Air Force in 1979 and later became an author. The book “A child called it” caused a dispute in his family, one of his brothers said it was not true, however his other brother who is an author wrote a book “A Brother’s Journey” which confirms Dave’s story. ...Burroughs In this book there were many characters involved that had different parts. The main was Augusten, a young boy caught in the middle of a family falling apart. His mother Deidre who is a poet, she at times at has psychotic breakdowns. Other characters were Dr.Finch who is Deidre’s therapist which who later becomes augustens legal guardian. Neil Bookman, one of Dr Finches patient and also Augustens first lover who is much older then him. Also there is Natalie; she is one of Dr.Finch’s daughters. She and Augusten become best friends towards the end. Few other people in the book are Fern, Deidre’s first lover, Dorothy, Deidre’s second lover, and Hope the oldest daughter of Dr. Finch. This story takes place in Massachusetts, Augusten goes from living in a wonderful clean big home to living with the therapist in a rundown old Victorian home in Northampton, the house has no order what so ever, its far from being clean, Dr. Finch feels he doesn’t need to tell everyone living with him what they should do, which include his wife and children and a few of this patients. Augusten begins to live with the Finch family have the separation of his mother and father, she believes she well be unable to be good parent. He deals with many different things and learns a lot by leaving at the Finch residence. ...Individual Assignment 2 1) If the company has already made the decision of going ahead with the musical and either if it will be a success or a flop they will still generate profits, there’s no sense in doing a market research. 2) A cartel is formed by a group of companies/countries which come together explicitly or tacitly to restrain supply of a certain good so that they can practice a monopolistic price or set specific prices for goods (price-setting). Eventually there’s more to description and detail which defines cartels but that won’t be taken in consideration in the following answer. All markets have their ups and downs in demand and this something that cartels have to endure in order to stay cohesive. However, sometimes it is profitable to deviate from practices of these organizations. As a matter of fact, in times of high demand the attractiveness for collusion drops significantly to a point where the defection is inherently triggered (Shakkil Hassan 2006). The incentive for deserting comes from the short-term benefits companies can obtain by undercutting their competitors and therefore gain all the market share. It’s a common practice in cartels to limit outputs and capacity so that prices stay high but in times of high demand the market asks for more quantity of the same good which is tempting for firms to expand their output, by augmenting capacity and therefore reducing prices to reach all customers.
