In order to integrate a Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) into a formal organizational structure I believe it must be added to the top management level of the organization. This level of management is comprised of individuals generally with the highest level of expertise and experience hence the word, ‘chief’ in their job title. The CSO would be the top level of the sustainability function of the organization due to his or her expertise in sustainability. In essence there would be a chain of command or a vertical hierarchy for the sustainability function of the organization. Within this function of the organization there will be managers that head a team of individuals that work on ways the organization can become more sustainable. The individuals within the team report to the managers and the managers report to CSO. Therefore, there is a functional grouping of individuals within the organization that perform a similar function and have similar knowledge of sustainability (Armstrong & Daft, ch. 3, pg.97). But, this one-dimensional structure isn’t sufficient because coordination of activities are only done between the top and bottom of the organization.
