This book is dedicated to my father, Bill, an old soldier who battles every day to overcome a horrendous stroke. He was a model enlightened entrepreneur, a fact that took me years to appreciate. His compassion with his employees and dedication to service inspired me to be a better businessman and a better person. When I was growing up, he liked to say, “Son, the most important word in the English language is ‘empathy.’ ” When I told him I was starting a business, his first words were, “Always treat your employees right.” He learned that appreciation the hard way, losing his father at a young age and countless war buddies in the trenches. But his love for God, country, and his fellow citizens never wavered. This one’s for you, Dad.

...in a big city has more advantages than living in the country side while others think differently. For me, I prefer living in a big city. Living in a quiet country side has several advantages. People benefit from clear air, tranquil atmosphere, less traffic and beautiful scene. In addition, people who live in small towns look out each other. This makes them feel secure. Moreover, crime rates are much less than big cities. People are comfortable leaving their doors unlocked. However, living in a metropolitan city has many more advantages. Firstly, many job opportunities are available as there are many companies, banks, offices and international companies. Secondly, there are many facilities and amenities for individuals. Publics amenities will provide services such as sports, arts and computer lessons with very low fee due to government supported programs. In addition, medical facilities and emergency systems are easily assessable when individuals live in big cities. Thirdly, people can have more choices when they buy necessities because there are numerous malls around their neighbourhood. They often buy the same material at a lower price due to bargain sales going on. Fourthly, transportation is extremely important in the modern society, but there are no public transportation systems in small towns, so individuals always use their own cars and walk. Big Changes for a Small Hospital Big Changes for a Small Hospital The factors that Nicholas Jacobs and Windber Medical Center applied from the Situational Theory is that Jacobs considered his role as president at Windber Medical Center was the last hope in keeping the doors open (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2012). As the Situational Leadership Model suggests the leader must make decisions to use developmental intervention such as telling, selling, participating and delegating (Hughes et.al, 2012). Jacobs did just this by realizing the problems such as the outdated furniture, leaking windows and pink walls. Jacobs took the problem at hand and came up with solutions such as community involvement and building community relationships. Jacobs used slogans such as “work out at our hospital so you can stay out of our hospital” (Hughes et.al, 2012), which encouraged a healthy lifestyle for the community as well as the employees. Jacobs interviewed employees to find out firsthand what they wanted for the Windber community and the medical center (Hughes et.al, 2012). This helped include the employees in the decisions of improvements, as well as gain information from those that knew the most about the patients, community and problems within the facility. This is what helped Jacobs learn that octogenarians made up a larger percentage of the population in Windber, Pennsylvania, than in all of the Dade County, Florida, and he made it a priority to provide more options......

Small Town or Big City

...Small Town or Big City I was born and raised in a small country town, where there were more corn fields than businesses. Everybody knew each other and what everyone did; needless to say; when you are young you could not do anything wrong without your family finding out. Living in a small town like this had its ups and downs, but mainly it was a great way to live. You never had to lock your doors at night, because you always felt safe. The only crime you saw was on TV and you could honestly say, that don’t happen here. It made you become close with your family, because they are all you had. The only downside for me was the lack of job opportunities, ones that actually paid you enough to live off of. I moved out of my parents house at the age of 17, when I graduated high school. I had always had a job or two so I could take care of myself and not rely on any help from my parents. By the age of 24, I realized this was not the way I wanted my life to be. My best friend and I decided we would look for work in the city and see if we could find anything. It did not take long for us to find a job that paid more and gave us benefits. The next step for us was to find a place to live and move to the big city. The hardest part for me, was having to say goodbye to my family. Knowing I was making a great decision to better my life, did not matter so much at that point. I felt like I was saying goodbye, forever. Big city here I come! ...The U.S. Small Business Administration sets guidelines for a business to be considered a small business. Small Business Administration (SBA) sets limitations on the amount of gross revenue on an organization that may collect before the agency considers it a big business. (Evans, n.d.) Depending on the type of service business depends on the revenue cap to consider it a small business. Retail service cannot earn no more than $5 to $21 mil in a three year period, construction service can earn $13.5 to $17 mil in a three year period, and agricultural can earn $0.5 to $9 mil in a three year period to be considered a small business. (Evans, n.d.) If they earn anymore they are considered big business. To be considered a small business it must have less than 15 employees. A small business, by contrast, typically encourages employees to take risks, innovate and even circumvent management-established policies to find new ways of increasing efficiency. (Evans, n.d.) Small businesses unlike big businesses have a single owner usually. Small businesses must be operated for profit, according to the SBA, and may not pursue non-profit status. (Evans, n.d.)
