Genie Wild Child

...1. Genie gave researchers an opportunity to ethically study the effects of nature vs. nurture. She had not been taught to talk or do really anything. However the fact that the researchers are not sure if she was retarded at birth or not kind of makes the results questionable, they finally had a chance to see how language develops in a grown person who was passed the critical period. 2. One of the first things the researchers looked at was her brain waves. They found that she had an abnormally large amount of sleep spindles. This is characteristic of people who are retarded. They also did speech practices where they would repeat a statement to her until she would be able to repeat some part of it back to them. Like when they got her to say “doctor”. In order to make sure she was able to form special bonds with people, the researchers gave her a derogate parent who was with her during times a parent would normally be with a child. 3. They found that there was not really a way for the both of them to get their way entirely. If they wanted to preform good research on her, then some of Genie’s interests were going to put second. While if her interests were all a priority, they would not be able to fully study her. 4. When the researchers first started to teach Genie how to talk, things looked promising; so promising in fact, that they thought they were going to disprove the critical period theory. However, Genies progress soon started to dwindle. She was not able to......

Genie

...FILM REVIEW In 1970, a wild child was found in California: a girl of 13 who had been isolated in a small room and had not been spoken to by her parents since infancy. “Genie,” as she was later dubbed to protect her privacy by the psycholinguists, who tested her, could not stand erect. At the time, she was unable to speak: she could only whimper. The case came to light when Genie’s 50 year old mother ran away from her 70 year old husband after a violent quarrel and took the child along. The mother was partially blind and applied for public assistance. The social worker in the welfare office took one look at Genie and called her supervisor, who called the police. Genie was sent to the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital for tests. Charges of wilful abuse were filed against both her parents, according to the Los Angeles Times. On the day he was due to appear in court, however, Genie’s father shot himself to death. He left a note in which he wrote. “The world will never understand.” As a social worker the developmental concerns that would be identified one year after Genie was found are: Unable to form relationships with peers. Extreme infantile noises and behaviours. An example of this was her whimpering and how she touched and felt objects for the first time, moving them closer to her face and lips. No emotions displayed, unable to express emotions. Hoarding liquids. Water temperature disparity. An example of this is the disconnection she has with the hot and cold......

Westover Electrical

...PGMT 723 Quality Assignment   Westover Electrical, Inc. Westover Electrical, Inc., is a medium-size Houston manufacturer of wire windings used in making electric motors. Joe Wilson, VP operations, has experienced an increasing problem with rejected product found during the manufacturing operation. "I’m not sure where to begin," admitted Joe at the weekly meeting with his boss. "Rejects in the Winding Department have been killing us the past two months. Nobody in operations has any idea why. I have just brought in a consultant, Roger Gagnon, to take a look at the situation and make recommendations about how we can find out what is going on. I don’t expect Roger to make technical recommendations–just see if he can point us in the right direction." Gagnon’s first stop later that day was the production floor. His discussions with the production supervisors in the Winding Department indicated that they had no real grasp of what the problem was or what to do to correct it. A tour of the winding operation indicated that there were three machines that wound wire onto plastic cores to produce the primary and secondary electric motor windings. After inspection by quality control (QC), these windings then went to the Packaging Department. Packaging personnel, Gagnon found, inspect their own work and make corrections on the spot. The problem is that too many windings are found to be defective and require reworking before they can be packaged. Gagnon’s next stop was the Quality......

The Two Wish Genie

...smoking. Then I see some kind of genie pop out of my coffee cup. I can tell shes a genie by the funny clothes she has on. She looks at me, smiles, and says that she is here to grant me two wishes. One wish has to be personal but the second one has to be on the behalf of others. I think about my wishes for just a few seconds then they both come to mind. My first wish is my personal wish. I wish that I would win the lottery. Not only win for myself but also for my parents so I could pay them back for everything they’ve done for me. Also I could give some of the money I would win to charities. Also I could use the money for starving kids in other countries. That brings me to my second wish. I would wish that I could stop world hunger. As I say that, the genie looks straight at me and says that she is going to grant both of my wishes. As she says that I’m wondering in my mind why this genie chose me. Why is she giving me the two wishes? I’m not sure if I’ve done anything good in my life so if she actually does grant my wishes then I would become a better person. The genie starts to close her eyes and lifting her arms up in the air. I feel as if the world stopped moving. Then all of a sudden the room is shaking and then the genie was gone. I look on the table and I see a lottery ticket laying there. Is this my chance I’m wondering. I turn on the news just as they are saying the winning ticket numbers. I won! I couldn’t believe that the genie actually made this happen.......

Genie Case

...MKTG577 Case: Genie Model 465 Timothy Flaherty Section 11121 Professor Hale October 6, 2014 Abstract The scenario in this medical devise case revolves around the training of a new sales representative. Specifically, this case addresses the effectiveness of the Sales Manager in dealing with the skill set development of the new salesman in selling the medical devise. This paper addresses the actual process the sales manager uses with the salesman and how it can be improved going forward for the mutual benefit of all stakeholders. The Genie Model 465 Sales Process Analysis Contained below are the case questions to be explored: “How might this sales manager's post-sales coaching session have been improved? What would you have done differently? Please provide your rationale to support your response? Make some recommendations about how the sales manager could have been more effective in his feedback to Joe. What could he have said? How could he have helped Joe during the sales call. Should the sales manager have behaved differently on the call?” My first impression based on the audio comments in the case; suggest to me that the sales manager’s demeanor was terrible. He was negative and talking down to the new representative during his post sales call debriefing. First of all, during the sales call I would have allowed myself to also have an exchange with the lab decision maker if I were the sales manager. It’s silly to be there and say nothing while......

Jones Electrical

...Current Position Jones Electrical Distribution (hereinafter Jones Electric) is currently facing an issue with cash flows, which will ultimately affect the overall profitability and growth potential for the company. The owner, Nelson Jones, is diligent in paying his suppliers within ten days in order to capitalize on a two percent early pay discount, but in doing so, has over-extended cash flows. Though the company has been profitable and growing over the past three years, its current lender, Metropolitan Bank, will not increase a line of credit (LOC) beyond $250,000, a LOC upon which Jones has recently fully drawn. In order to ease the tensions of depleting cash reserves, Jones is seeking a higher LOC from another lender, Southern Bank & Trust (SB&T). A higher LOC will not only cover overhead expenses and take advantage of early pay discounts, but could also be invested in the continued growth of sales, as well as, potentially opening new locations. After weighing his options, Jones is convinced that he has to take on more debt in order to keep the business moving forward. Thus far, Jones is only contemplating one financing option, a higher LOC from SB&T. The terms of LOC are not favorable when weighed against Jones’s objective to grow the business. SB&T will limit the drawable amount, control investments in fixed assets, and control Jones’s withdrawal of funds from the business. As such, Jones needs to reconsider SB&T’s offer and consider other financing......

Genie and Nell

...Nell and Genie Comparison Background Story: * What happened to them? * They were both isolated from the world. In Nell’s case, the isolation was much less severe because she was able to grow on her own. She was more self-sufficient than Genie was. Genie was completely dependent on someone else. She didn’t have the ability to completely grow. * How were they found? * Nell’s mother was found dead one day by the man who was bringing her groceries. That same man found Nell after she made a noise in the back room. He went back to town and told the policeman about her. The doctor (Lovell) followed the policeman and then met Nell. * Genie was found after her mother escaped her house and found the police and brought them back to the house. They found her sitting on a potty chair. * Why were they isolated? * Nell’s mother isolated her and her sister because she was raped when she was younger, and didn’t want her girls to grow up in the same terrible, hateful world that she grew up in. She wanted her girls to be safe. * Genie was isolated because her father thought she was mentally disabled. He didn’t want people to know about her, so he locked her up. * What were the circumstances/details? * Nell was living on her own in the forest in the mountains. She was over twenty years old, and she was able to fend for herself. She chopped wood by herself, so she was strong, she could feed herself, and she was obviously doing well......

Genie

...Course: Psychology Professor: Mr. Falzone Genie The Wild Child After reading the story of Genie the Wild Child my heart truly ached for this child. The abuse this child endured was despicable and cruel and no human being should go through this kind of abuse. Due to the abuse and isolation of this child, she developed a “bunny like” walk, only knew twenty words and had not developed into a normal twelve year old child she looked and acted like she was six years old. Genie’s had an older brother who was abused as well, but he was rescued by their grandmother who helped him regain his life and move past the physical and mental abuse. Genie also had two other siblings that died at the hands of her parents (one locked in a garage for crying and the other died from RH-blood poisoning right after being born). Genie however was left with her parents and began to suffer mentally and physically. Her behavior was not of a normal 12-13 year old child. She was strapped to an infant’s potty seat during the day and at night she was put in a confined sleeping bag. Her father felt she had special needs and felt restraining Genie was the solution so others would not pick on her or exploit her. How her father handled Genie’s condition did not help her, it only hindered her and made her abnormal. When she would speak, she was beaten so Genie stayed silent in fear of punishment from her father. Genies father felt she would die young, but agreed to get Genie help if she made it to the age of......

Electrical Power

...Electrical Power Assignment 1 Task 3 – Q4 3 Phase Transformer Construction Diagram Description As shown in the diagram above, a three phase has three sets of iron cores instead of the one of a single phase transformer. Each ‘leg’ of the transformer has its own primary and secondary windings. Each primary winding will have the same amount of coils as will each secondary winding. The three primary windings (shown above as P1, P2 and P3) and the secondary windings (shown above as S1, S2 and S3) can be connected in either a star or delta arrangement to give a required output. Also the output could be wired in a zigzag arrangement for special purposes where a phase shift of 30° is required. Core Types There are a few different types of core that are used in transformers, some are described below: Solid Cores Solid cores are just made of solid iron and are used in circuits such as switch mode power supplies which operate above mains frequencies and even up to a few kHz. The materials used in these cores combine high magnetic permeability with high electrical resistivity. Laminated Steel Cores These cores are made from layers of high permeability silicon steel and are usually used at power and audio frequencies. They are used because in a solid core at high frequencies ‘eddy currents’ are formed. The laminations confine eddy currents inside each lamination and so decrease the losses. Air Cores An air core is simply a transformer without any core......
