To Live Is To Suffer Suffering is an inescapable part of life. There isn’t anything we can do about it, it just happens. Whether it involves the minor bumps or bruises of daily living or major traumas such as incurable illness, death or the breaking of a family, suffering touches all of our lives at on point or another. We as humans can't help to ask the question why. Why do so many people get sick and die? Why are people constantly being judged by society? Why do people have to work so hard just to have enough money to barely feed their families? A person’s character is developed by life experiences. Helen Keller claims, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience or trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” The emotional baggage one goes through in life and the choices they make, defines who they become. In the “The Grass Eaters” by Krishnan Varma and “No face” by Junot Diaz both emphasizes two different ways people suffer and how experiences, good or bad, can make you a better person. Although suffering can be very difficult, it can also be critical for developing strong character because it makes people more understanding individuals. Suffering is important in life because it helps us become more understanding individuals because it gives us a chance to rise above hard times. Over coming suffering is not what happened to us, its about how we respond to it. When you know what it feels like to suffer, the next time you have a problem, you have a better understanding on how to deal with it. Diaz states, “So many wish him to fall. So many wish him gone” (1). This is an accurate illustration of what his community thought about him. After defending himself from bullies, his little brother Pesao asks,…...

Live on

...“Live On” You, little one who cries every day and dreams without a smile every night, hear me out and don’t lose yourself. Do not give up because, to live on, you have to fight. Small yet big girl, stop crying every wrong done you. Focus on what you do and who you are. Realize already you are hurting others too. See you neglect the friends you don’t know you have, though about that you truly don’t have a clue. Defenseless girl, take off your grey and wet blindfold. Notice the hands that are trying to reach you for you to hold. It is for you that they are trying so hard, and the distance between you and them is not a yard. Confused girl, perhaps it is unfair to you. You are just a kid, but you already feel like this. You feel misunderstood; you feel unnecessary. You think you’re falling into an abyss. You feel you are incompetent at expressing yourself. You think you’ve for too long been amiss. You question life; you cannot understand its meaning. You don’t know you’re too young to know of what life consists. You don’t know what to think of yourself; you question your existence. You are so weary and frustrated at how your flow of tears persists! However, not all is sorrow; not everything is aching sadness. Behind the loneliness you obsess about, there is also bliss. You can become strong. You can find happiness. You can live! But for that to be, you first have to believe your will exists. Blind girl, God and many others love you so......

A Good God Will Not Allow People to Suffer.

...A good God will not allow people to suffer. Discuss. Some people believe that this statement is true. They believe that God is benevolent and therefore he is all loving, creating a positive image of himself where people believe that he wouldn’t inflict pain on any one of his creation. However, it’s not always down to God, for example some people believe in the act of free will, this means that the actions humans do such as murder, rape etc… don’t involve God. He gave humans free will so we’re responsible for what we decide to do with our life with little involvement from God. When God created the world he made it perfect. He then left his stewards to take care of and look after the world therefore a good God did create a world without suffering however it is the humans of the world that have designed a world full of pain and suffering. It is known that the Devil is the creator of evil therefore it may be possible to believe that it isn’t Gods decision but the devil has created the suffering in the world. Other people believe that this statement is false. They think that if there is no pain or suffering in our life then we won’t appreciate the good things when they happen. We would be emotionless because we can’t differentiate the good things from the bad things. Also, Christians say that God is omnipotent however if He really is all powerful then why doesn’t he intervene when a natural disaster, for example tsunamis and tornados occur instead of letting them destroy......

Why Do People Suffer

...In contrast, we are unable to live without sinning at times - I John 1:8, Romans 3:23 D. When we ask “Why me?” we are implying that we have no responsibility for the problems we sometimes face. 1. This might be true at times, but I’ve seen people say, “Why am I being evicted from my apartment?” Perhaps it is because you are behind on paying your rent. 2. People tend to ignore or make light of their own responsibilities. E. Yet there are times that bad things happen, which are totally out of our control. 1. Still, we shouldn’t say that these things should not happen because we are too good to experience them. F. One of the things that the Bible teaches us is that sin has consequences – whether we are referring to our own sin or the sins of another. 1. Jeremiah lamented that their fathers and sin, yet they still bore the consequences - Lamentations 5:7 2. This is not to say they were being punished for the sins of their fathers. 3. Notice in Jeremiah 31:28-30. God is saying they are suffering for continuing in the sins of their fathers. 4. People so often think they are different - Matthew 23:29-36 III. Second, what do we mean by “suffer” A. ......

We Live in ...

...We live in an imperfect world. Right at this moment, wars are being fought, people being wounded and killed. The media, reporting these to the public, does not generate more violence, rather, it can help to diminish violence in society by making people look these problems in the face. Land mines in Angola were a cause of destruction and devastation to its impoverished people. That is, until Princess Diana stepped in. Photogenic and popular, she instantly attracted all the cameras. The world found out about innocent children hobbling through life on wooden legs, families blown to bits by the pernicious land mines. With this 'CNN effect', people from around the world donated $500 million to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. And even though Diana is gone now, The Ottawa Convention and its ratification by 64 countries last week are the positive and long-lasting effects of the Media's scrutiny. The war in Bosnia might never have stopped, had it not been for the courageous reporters who took photographs and made reports on the bloody and gory conflict. Bombarded by letters and calls from appalled members of the public, members of parliaments across Europe and congressmen in the United States forced their governments to deal with the issue. Ultimately this led to the involvement of peace keeping United Nations troops to control conflict. The media reflects violence. It frequently makes accurate reports on horrible situations, so drawing public concern...

To Live

...Weight Loss: Eat To Live - Not Live To Eat By Mary ShomonJanuary 7, 2004 Wendy Hearn has some thoughts about why we eat... "Do you find yourself eating food when you're not even hungry? I've noticed that others, myself included, often eat food without even stopping to assess whether we're hungry or not. I encourage you to get in touch with your body and eat only when you need to. This entails being aware of your body's needs and not eating food if you're not hungry.  When I speak to people who maintain a healthy weight level without any real effort, I find one of the keys for them is they only eat when they're hungry. If they're not hungry they don't eat. This group of people generally find it hard to understand how the rest of us can eat food if we're not hungry.  As most of you know, when we eat food when we're not hungry, this is usually being triggered by something else which is going on in our lives. One of the first steps to identifying these triggers and dealing with them is for you to be aware of the times when you're hungry and the times when you're not.  This will take some time and effort to start with, but as with any habit, it becomes easier over time. Eventually, you will unconsciously go through the process of determining when you're really hungry.  First, you need to start thinking consciously about your hunger levels. I would suggest that in your mind or on paper you create a ladder with 10 rungs and label each rung with a level of hunger,......

One Must Suffer to Be Beautiful

...Bartoszek 1 Magdalena Bartoszek Professor Mathew Sarkowicz ENG 101 5761 12 December 2011 One must suffer to be beautiful – Beauty standards in America. People are obsessed with beauty. Nowadays media creates an image of attractiveness showing only young, slim and beautiful people. Extreme dieting is very popular and cosmetic surgeries become a lucrative business. But how far are you willing to go in order to be beautiful? It may seem unbelievable what a female is willing to go through and what she is able to do to herself to be loved and accepted. The French say “L'un doit souffrir pour être beau” which translates to “One must suffer to be beautiful”. It is well known that women for centuries have suffered to be perfect. Robin Marantz Henig, the author of “The Price of Perfection” walks us through epochs and different cultures to demonstrate how the trends were changing over the years. Back in times ladies had had different methods to improve themselves. In China well-born girls were binding their feet to ensure the size of three- or four-inch long. Small feet represented the economic and social attraction. Girl’s foot was folded in half and wrapped tightly with bandage. After a while the feet were turning blue, sometimes soles and toes dropped off. Every few weeks the feet were squeezed into a smaller size of shoe until it became about four inches creating a “perfect foot called the Golden Lotus”. Back in 17th century, a tightlacing was......

Obstacles African Americans Suffer

...Obstacles African Americans Suffer The definition of an ‘obstacle’ is ‘something that obstructs or hinders progress.’ African Americans from the start of time, have always experienced obstacles. The reason for the suffering behind these obstacles is probably imbedded somewhere in the deep history from which African Americans come from. However, in today’s society, one would think that a specific race would not have to endure any obstacles because of their race, but African Americans do. African Americans today, still face discrimination and fewer opportunities in the federal workplace. The United States Equal Employment Opportunity is a federal law enforcement agency which enforces laws against workplace discrimination of any sort. The United States Equal Employment Opportunity investigates discrimination issues based on a person’s race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability. Between 2010 and 2012, the United States Equal Employment Opportunity worked with other bias agencies to discover the discrimination issues which African Americans suffered in the federal workplace. One of the biggest obstacles which African Africans suffer in the federal workplace is dealing with the unconscious biases and perceptions about African Americans. These biases and perceptions play a significant role in employment decisions in the federal sector. These unconscious biases are generally based off of learned stereotypes that operate automatically when we......

Live in Relationship

...LIVE IN RELATIONSHIP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cohabitation_in_India Cohabitation or live-in relationships in India though not illegal, is considered socially and morally improper. Cohabitation is prevalent mostly among the people living in metro cities in India. Legal decisions[edit] Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 recognises “relationship in the nature of marriage” and protects female partners from domestic violence. Such partners can claim monetary and other reliefs under the Act.[1] In S. Khushboo Vs. Kanniammal & Anr.,[2] the Supreme Court of India, placing reliance upon its earlier decision in Lata Singh Vs. State of U.P. & Anr.,[3] held that live-in-relationship is permissible only in unmarried major persons of heterogeneous sex. The Supreme Court on 13 August 2010 in the case of Madan Mohan Singh & Ors v. Rajni Kant & Anr. [4] has once again entered the debate on legality of the Live-in Relationship as well as legitimacy of Child born out of such relationship. The Court while dismissing the appeal in the property dispute held that there is a presumption of marriage between those who are in live-in relationship for a long time and this cannot be termed as 'walking-in and walking-out' relationship. In the case of Bharata Matha & Ors v. R. Vijaya Renganathan & Ors. [5]dealing with the legitimacy of child born out of a live-in relationship and his succession of property rights, the Supreme Court held that child born......

The Film : to Live

...The movie “To Live” directed by Zhang Yimou follows the life of one family in China from the beginning days of gambling dens in the 1940s to the austere hardship of the Cultural Revolution in 1960s. The movie mainly focuses on the character Fugui, who is the husband of the household. He encounters many hardships later on, but he somehow survives. By following his life, the audience receives the message from the movie such that life is hard, but nothing is worse than dying. Throughout the movie the historical background of each era is provided with great detail. Starting with Fugui’s spoiled gambling habit and the loss of all his family’s property in the 1940s to the time when Fugui and his wife, Jiazhen, nurture their grandchildren, Mantou. The movie shows the audience a bit of how Chinese people in that time era lived. Also, the movie depicts the politically important incidents in the civil war era in the 1940s, the “Great Leap Forward” period in the 1950s, and the “Cultural Revolution” period of the 1960s. The life of Fugui and his family reflects lives of Chinese people in this turbulent period where people experience much hardship and changes, but I believe those hardships and changes give people the true meaning of life and appreciation for their lives. Furthermore, the movie demonstrates how one family is able to survive the politically unstable eras in China. By doing so, the movie did not end as just a movie that criticizes the communism. My first impression......

Why Watch People Suffer

...Why Watch Families Suffer! I’m a mother of 2 and working a full time job, if the state decided to cut funding programs for child care assistance it would be devastating. Putting me in a position to either quit my job or find another one to be able to afford child care. This would just be the beginning of my downward spiral, one that could land me back in my mother’s residents where I lived for many years. I watched my mother struggle raising 11 children growing up; I would never have thought I would experience this situation. I grew up in Decatur, Illinois in what I would describe a dysfunctional family, with my father leaving my mother when I was very young. Making thinks much harder for my mother with 11 kids forcing my older siblings to take responsibility at a very young age. When I was 16 I had my first child, and it was a new outlook on life, worrying about how I was going to take care of her while in high school. Always having to find a different baby sitter daily and hoping for the best while I wasn’t around. In 2012 I gave birth to my second child; creating challenges for myself I wasn’t ready for. Now I just had double the problems. Now with everyone working in my immediate family I had nowhere to take my children while I went out and tried to make an honest living for them. Now i had no choice but to leave my children with neighbors. One day the neighbors left my oldest unattended near a hot iron, and she pulled it down with her arm, leaving her with a burns and a......

Suffer the Little Children

...Suffer the little children Education is a highly spoken subject in the Danish society. It has a great influence if children are taught and educated well. Although teaching a class can bring up some frictions between the teacher and the pupils. Furthermore, a teacher has to change his or her way of teaching because they have to consider the interests of one individual pupil. If a pupil feels that the individual demands is not fulfilled the outbreak can be devastating. A teacher has to respect pupils and the pupils have to respect their teacher. Fear should not appear between teachers and pupils. Similar problems are depicted in the short story Suffer the little children, by Stephen King. Although in this exact story it is the demands of the teacher which is not fulfilled. She is called Miss Sidley and she is teaching a middle school class. One day while over watching the children through a reflection Miss Sidley a monster appears from a pupil. From this point Miss Sidley loses her mind, and becomes very paranoid and in the end she kills her pupils because of this monster grudge. The short story is told by a third person narrator, who is not a part of the story. The main character is an omniscient person which simply means one can get to her thoughts and feelings. Furthermore, this make one feel pity for Miss Sidley because it is a direct path for her feelings and more important discoveries. As mentioned earlier the main character is Miss Sidley, who......

To Live Essay

...Chinese Essay I recently watched the movie To Live (为了活着) by Zhang Yimou, It was about life in China during the Cultural Revolution. I think the Cultural Revolution (文化革命) that happened from 1966 to 1976, was a horrible time for the chinese, there were millions of deaths and inflicted cruel and inhuman treatments on hundreds of millions of people. It was obviously a very bad time for the chinese, and it was a very hard life. If only the nationalist party won, the cultural revolution wouldn't have happened, there would’ve been a lot less deaths and less suffering. I think similar about the Great Leap forward (大跃进) that happened from 1958 to 1961, the estimate of people killed is more than 35 million people. That is absolutely insane, it’s hard to believe that so many people could be killed in a period of a few years. The communists were not good for the Chinese at all.The part that made me feel the saddest was when Fengxia died because there were no doctors to help her, they were all sent to jail. It really annoys me how the communist sent all the doctors to jail, there would have been significantly less deaths in China. I really respect the author for not sugar coating the novel, he really showed what happened during that time period. If I could change the movie, I wouldn’t really change much, the movie really lives up to its name. It does a good job of showing the watcher what it was like to live during the Cultural Revolution....

Holy Lives

...Holy Lives If you put a buzzard in a pen six or eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of his ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten or twelve feet. Without space to run, as is his habit, he will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top. The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkable nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle around helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash. A Bumblebee if dropped into an open tumbler will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exist, until it completely destroys itself. In many ways, there are a lot of people like the buzzard, the bat, and the bee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations, trials and tribulations, heart-breaks and head-aches...stressed out, strung out and on the verge of giving out, not realizing that the power of God to withstand every situation is inherent within you and the answer to life's most difficult problems is just above you........
