Understanding Student Misconceptions Understanding and identifying student misconceptions is the core of teaching. To become an exceptional and exemplar educator one must consider and identify any student misconceptions as part of the planning process in creating daily lessons. Identifying student misconceptions during the planning process assist educators in addressing them during direct instruction and or small group instruction; thus preventing them from appearing later in the lesson. If misconceptions aren’t identified during the planning process they will arise during assessments and often times that is too late. Identifying student misconceptions prior allows educators to correct them before assessments; thus providing a true picture of what the student has learned.
Misconceptions in Language Arts During practicum observations hours which are required for this program and currently teaching Language Arts, there have been many student misconceptions observed. For instance, one very common misconception is creating text-dependant questions. With a latest reading concept called Close Reading part of the process is to have the students generate text-dependant questions. Students often struggle with the concept that a text-dependant question is generated where the answer can be found in the text; that in order to answer the question one must refer back to the text. Instead of creating text-dependent questions students typically will make comments and or generalizations about the text. In some cases they will provide their opinions or what they liked most or disliked most about the text. The common image of an Arab is a turbaned dark man with a long beard. However this image is always associated with Muslims which minorities of the Arabs are part of. Arabs make only 15% of the world’s Muslim population. As a matter of fact the Middle East comes in third in numbers with East Asia coming in at first (69%) and Africa (27%) coming in at second. Another common misconception is that all Arabs are Muslims. While the vast majority of Arabs are Muslims (75%), there are many other religions that Arabs practice including Christianity and Judaism (PBS). The other major misconception involves the women, the vast majority of women who speaks Arabic, but certainly not all, wear a headscarf and some form of modest dress, relatively few covers their face or wear a “burqa”, covering themselves from head to toe. These women are active participants in their families and their societies. Push, pull, and falling out factors provide a framework for understanding dropouts. Push factors include school-consequence on attendance or discipline. Children may arrive at Key Stage 3 with deeply imbedded misconceptions of forces and motion that not only affect how they initially think about forces and motion, but also the way in which they learn. One cannot simply teach a new way of thinking without first addressing the underlying misconceptions, and challenging these views. This study focuses on one group of mixed ability year 7 students, studying the forces topic over a course of ten lessons (approximately 11 hours contact time). On Friday they collected 25 bottles and cans while on Saturday they collected 60 bottles and cans. How many bottles and cans did Maria and Mary collect in all? I then ask myself “What’s the point, why do they make us do this stuff, I can’t wait till this class is over.” Word problems are found to be very difficult for many students; especially those who have disabilities. Studies published in the article “Going Beyond the Math Wars” by Cole and Wasburn-Moses states that “Only 8% of students with disabilities scored at or above proficient on a national assessment of mathematical proficiency” (Cole & Wasburn Moses, 2010).
